Upon the Mount Honours Shall Fall

Ng Miu Yee Maria

Springing to mind on Carmel’s 60th anniversary is our school song, which aptly encapsulates the school’s mission and growth over the years:

For truth and right
Here Carmel e’er shall stand
In dauntless pursuit of love and peace
Loyalty full
May God be glorified
And honours
Upon the Mount
Shall fall

Particularly stirring is the word “dauntless”.  Carmel had been faced with difficulties that seemed insurmountable – the gruelling search by our founders for a school site back in the early 1960s, lacking proper facilities and being short of funds in its operation as a private school throughout the 1960s and 70s, the bold but aborted mother tongue trial in the late 1980s, the appeal to retain English as the teaching medium in 1998, to name but a few.   All these required immense courage and dogged determination, just as “dauntless” denotes.

Yet every challenge is testimony to our loyalty to and faith in our Lord, as well as His abundant blessings.  The greater the difficulty, the harder we pray to Him and the more we witness His wondrous works.  Through embracing the Christian values of truth, right, love, peace and loyalty, Carmel has gone from strength to strength and now stands tall as a school with a good reputation, strong leadership, high-calibre students, supportive parents and alumni, and dedicated staff.

For Carmel to continue to thrive in the years to come, our mission of providing quality Christian education remains the cornerstone.  May God be glorified through Carmel, and may He bless all Carmelians.
