Good morning teachers and F.1 students,

I’m Kelly Shum, a form 3 student. It’s a great honour to be invited here to share the effective learning methods and the school life in Carmel with you.

Have your parents been grumbling that you slept very late at night, at early hours? Do these scenes ring a bell? In secondary school, there are eight subjects instead of four subjects in primary school. Many students cannot handle the heavy homework. I’ve been one of you before. But then I tried to discuss homework with my classmates and ask questions actively in the evening study class. It really worked! So, if you have difficulty in homework and studying, I suggest you join the evening study class. The teachers in the hall can explain the answers to you when you need help. You can also discuss the questions with your classmates in groups. This will certainly help you understand more about the subjects you learnt and the homework you have done. “To learn and review it from time to time”, as the Chinese saying goes. If you finish your homework within less time, you can have more time to do lesson preparation and revision. So, you can then be confident to fight for those eight subjects!

Some of you still cannot get used to using English in most lessons. Some of you cannot understand what the teachers say and teach since they teach in English. English is so important. Reading English story books and using more English in your daily life can help you improve your English. Joining more English activities also helps you a lot.

Apart from studies, many of you cannot manage your time and your activities. Since the homework is quite heavy in Carmel, students cannot handle it as they still join many activities like in primary school. Thus I strongly recommend you only join one or two school teams or activities. Then, you can have more spare time to focus on your own studies. There are still some students who don’t know how to use time wisely and effectively. I can tell you that it is a wise way to schedule your work by using a timetable. Wise time management is important because you can readily complete your work in an orderly way whatever how heavy your workload is! You can also sleep earlier since you have already finished your work early.

Besides, some of you still feel lonely since you still find it hard to make friends with others classmates. If I were you, I would give a hand to the classmates in difficulty and discuss homework with them actively. Since more communication with others is vital, taking part in more inter-class competitions can help you to make more friends too. Also, we shall be more considerate and care about our peers and teachers. We should greet teachers actively when we meet up them. Day by day you can make many friends or even fellow travellers. Then you will never feel lonely in Carmel.

I hope the above tips can let you know well about the life in Carmel. Let’s enjoy the wonderful and colourful school life in Carmel! Thank you.
