Other than the main character, Stanley, Hector Zeroni is also a boy with a great character in the book ‘Holes’. He is the smallest kid at Camp Green Lake. He is poor, but caring and honest. He then becomes the best friend of Stanley in the Camp Green Lake.

Zero is very poor because he is an orphan. His mother leaves him alone and does not come back. Zero even doesn’t know that stealing is not a right action because he is not educated. This makes him have to go to Camp Green Lake to dig holes every day to receive punishment. Also, Zero is disappointed by others in Camp Green Lake. The camp counselors and boys think he is dumb as he hardly ever talks and doesn’t know how to read. So they all call him Zero, which means that there is nothing in his head.

Although Zero is a poor boy, he is loyal to his friend, Stanley. Stanley is once hurt by Zigzag. Zero stops Zigzag from doing that because he does not want Stanley to get hurt. Besides, he offers to help Stanley to dig the holes. He just asks Stanley to teach him how to read in return. He does not intend to take advantages from Stanley. These show that Zero is a caring person.

Besides being loyal to his friend, Zero is also very honest. As he doesn’t know that stealing is wrong before, he steals Clyde Livingston’s shoes. But later, the police think that Stanley is the thief, so they catch him to the Lake. After that, Zero still tells Stanley that he is actually the one who steals the shoes. From here, we can see tea Zero is an honest person because he chooses to tell Stanley that truth.

In conclusion, Zero is really a likeable and impressive character in this story. We still remember this character vividly because he is unique. He is honest, loyal and caring, so he is a true friend that is worth making.
