Treasure your time

Greetings everyone, I’m Chris Wong, the President of the Students’ Union. It is my great honour to speak to the graduates of 2014 today.

Time flies so fast. We went from F.1 to F.6 in the blink of an eye.  I was listening to the radio while I was preparing for this speech, and a song’s lyrics struck me.  The song goes, ‘Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman’s face. Hours are like diamonds, don’t let them waste. Time waits for no one, no favour has he. Time waits for no one, and he won’t wait for me.’  Therefore today, our focus is time.

After graduation, we all have different plans for our future.  Some would like to continue their study, some would like to set up their own business, and some might even want to find a date.  No matter what kind of plans you have in mind, your greatest friend or enemy is ‘time’. You can spend your whole life achieving your dreams and goals.  It’s just a matter of how you use your time.  Some of you might think that you still have a lot of time, and only make slow progress. When you realize you’re running out of time, that’s already too late.  That’s why you should treasure your own time, and make good use of it.

You may ask how you can make good use of your time.  Well I’m barely a high school graduate, my advice is not professional, but here are a few tips that I hope could help you all.

Procrastination is always the hardest thing to beat.  Thus, do not procrastinate. Don’t give yourselves any chance to do so. When you procrastinate, time goes faster, and you’re not doing anything positive at all.  Just like what the lyrics said, ‘Time waits for no one, no favours has he.’ Time slips through your fingers like sand; it won’t wait for you. You have to grasp it tight in your fist.

‘Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman’s face.’  We should manage our time and do things that we wish to before it’s too late.  Take all the possible chances and don’t waste them.  If you want to start your own business, do it now; if you want to invent the next smartphone that’s cooler than an iPhone, start now.  Your dreams and goals can’t wait, and time won’t wait either. Don’t waste any second of your life, don’t wait till you’re old and your skin is all wrinkled.  Then regret.

Last but not least, don’t be intimidated by time.  There is no such thing as ‘no time’ if you use your time wisely.  525,600 minutes a year, you have plenty lot of time.  Don’t let time stop you from dreaming. A lot of people with big dreams and goals never achieve what they wish because they think that they won’t have enough time to invest in it. They just leave it in a cold dark corner and never ever retrieve it.  Time is never a restriction if you make good use of it.

We are all still young and green to his world and we do have a lot of time.  Even though we still have years and years to reach our dreams and goals, if we waste our time and days, there aren’t many left.  We should live every day like it’s our last day, don’t let any second go and be wasted.

I wish everyone a bright and brilliant future.  Treasure your time.  Thank you.
