A day as a coffee shop assistant

I always thought that being a coffee shop assistant was an easy task and I could earn money in a relaxing way. Yet, I have changed my mind towards work since yesterday.

Yesterday, I went to my uncle’s café. He had not got enough staff in his café, so he invited me to work in his café for one day to help him and also gain some work experience. So, I got a day as a coffee shop assistant.

Working in a café seemed quite interesting. I could earn money by standing at the cashier or making coffee which seemed to be very simple tasks for me. However, things were not under my control at last.

At first, I thought making coffee was easy. All I had to do was to mix the coffee powder with some milk and sugar. Unfortunately, a lot more skills were required in making a cup of coffee. For example, I should pay attention to the ratio of coffee and milk. I had to have persistence in making coffee.

Due to the failure of making coffee, I had a try of being a cashier. Arithmetic was my strength and I was very confident in handling the job. However, my self – esteem hit the rock bottom. The music played in the café made me feel relaxed. So, I collected money relaxingly, yet slowly.  When I realized that I was too slow, the customers had already got impatient and they had been grumbling. I felt really depressed.

As my uncle saw that, he asked me to collect the cups and dishes after the customers had finished their cake and coffee. While I was thinking that it was the easiest task of all, I broke some dishes and cups. The relaxing atmosphere was spoiled.  I felt really embarrassed. Fortunately, my uncle was not mad at me.

Though I made a lot of mess, a day as a coffee shop assistant is a good experience, which helps me understand myself better.  At first, I really thought that it was easy to work, especially in a café but I discovered that working in a café is, in fact, quite tough and challenging, especially making a cup of coffee.
