Write an essay either for or against the statement, " It is better to study in a coeducational school (a school with students of both sexes) than a single-sex school."
Nowadays, there are both coeducational schools and single-sex schools in Hong Kong. Some parents prefer letting their children study in a coeducational school to studying in a single-sex school but some of them do not. To me, I agree with the statement, “It is better to study in a coeducational school than a single-sex school” because of the following reasons.
First of all, learning in a coeducational school can let the students learn how to communicate with different people. In a coeducational school, there are both males and females. And therefore, they can talk with people of different sexes. In a single-sex school, there are not many chances for students to know more about the thought of the opposite sex. In the future, students from a coeducational school will be able to talk with different people with different characteristics. In comparison, students from a single-sex school may not be able to talk with different people of the opposite sex. Therefore, I think studying in a coeducational is better than studying in a single-sex school.
What is more, some students in single-sex schools have no interest in the people of opposite sex. I do not think this is good to them. At present, people who are in love with the people of the same sex are discriminated by the others. If the students in single-sex schools really have a romantic relationship with people of the same sex, they may need to face big pressure from their friends, parents or even the public. They will not be happy at all. As a result, I think studying in a coeducational school is better than studying in a single-sex school because students who come from a coeducational school may have a better mental health in future.
Lastly, studying in a coeducational school can let the students know more about the opposite sex. In a single- sex school, students can only know the thought of people of the same sex. They may not be able to know the thought of the opposite sex. Moreover, students who study in a single-sex school may be afraid of going out on a date with the people of the opposite sex. Finally, it may lead to the problem that is mentioned in the previous paragraph. Hence, I think that studying in a single-sex school is not good for students. It is difficult for them to learn more about people of the opposite sex.
To sum up, studying in a coeducational school is beneficial to students’ social skills, mental health and their understanding of people of the opposite sex. In conclusion, I agree with the statement, “It is better to study in a coeducational school than a single-sex school.”.
