Life is… (2B Hardy Chan)

I always think that life is a cup of coffee. Sometimes it tastes sweet, sometimes bitter. Someone says coffee is just like life. Try not to drink coffee so fast. Try to taste the vicissitudes of life. I didn’t understand how I could taste so many things in a cup of coffee when I was only a tiny kid (The main reason is that all kinds of coffee in my mouth were bitter). However, when I became older, with more experience, I started to study how to drink coffee. I gradually discovered the difference among different kinds of coffee.

Espresso, the bitterest coffee, is one of the most expensive types (except coffee beans). You can know something from its name. Yep, Espresso is also known as ‘Express Coffee’. It is one of a kind. Most kinds of coffee have other elements added to it, such as milk, water, and chocolate. However, Espresso is the only kind that does not have any other things added to it. It is the coffee. Life is the same. There are so many different feelings in our lives, happiness, sadness, worries… To me, life is bitter. It’s sad. It’s the Espresso. Maybe you’ll think that I’m so full of negative energy. Have you tried to taste Espresso thoroughly? Beyond the bitterness, there’s a taste of astringency. Astringency not only consists of bitterness but is also a kind of sour taste and sweet aftertaste. And there’re different tastes with different beans. Some are sourer, while some are more bitter, just like the difficulties in your life. Some are much more bitter. Some are sad. However, if you have never experienced the painful feeling, how will you treasure the sweetness? Even if you face sweetness, will you understand its value? No bitter, no sweet. The more bitter you feel, the sweeter you will feel later, just like espresso, bitter, ‘expensive’ but valuable.

Caramel Macchiato is one of the sweetest kinds of coffee. Most people make it by putting espresso and herbs into hot milk and adding caramel. When you drink it, you can first taste caramel, and then you can taste the mix of milk and espresso. Just like life, most of the time you feel happy at first. For example, you will mostly enjoy the start of a game or playing with your friends. Then, after the comfortable feeling, you will feel a bit worried, worrying about the end of the game or the day. Of course, you may be enjoying the present moment, but then, the game will eventually end, and so will the day. You won’t be happy but empty. You will understand the happy part has gone reluctantly. Happy time always ends quickly. Although reluctant, we still look forward to the next happy time. And precisely because of the sweetness during that time, we can go through the bitter part because we know hope is in front of us.
