Smoking has been a huge and hot topic currently. Thanks to our advanced technology, people nowadays know a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of smoking cigarettes. The topic today is about if parents should be forced to quit smoking.

I strongly believe that smoker-parents should be forced to quit smoking. Take Hong Kong as an example, Hong Kong is a civilized city and people have the liberty to do anything they want if it’s not against the laws. Then people may say that they have the right to smoke as a parent. You have the right to smoke. Right. But then what about your child? Does he/she have the right to choose whether they want to fill their lungs with second-hand smoke or not? No. Then it means that you are actually taking away your loved ones’ personal rights. Even if you argue that they don’t mind, what about ones’ health conditions? . I’m sure you would really be concerned and down if your family members are getting really sick, right? Having parents forced to quit smoking is not just about the parent’s own good, it’s also about protecting others’ right. Remember, smokers are only the minority, non-smokers are the real majority.

Talk about the parent’s problem. Commonly, we know that there will be some big problems physically when you are addicted to smoking. You might want to take all the responsibility and you still think that it is not crucial to force smoker-parents to quit smoking. Think about your child. He or she might be so worried about you and they can’t concentrate a lot, and there will be mental disorders here and there. It is not just about yourself. All parents love their kids. Although they might love them in different ways, there is still something that would always be kept constant—-it’s that they don’t want their child to be hurt, sick or down because of them. What if the parent died of diseases? I’m sure the young child will be affected whole life long. Look at some extreme but common cases. Pregnant mother kept smoking. What’s the big deal about it? Scientifically, the child’s brain will be damaged permanently or that they might miss some body parts when they are born. The child is innocent. The child is innocently hurt because of the selfishness of his or her mother! How cruel it is! Smoking as a parent is against the ethical morality of humanity and thus smoker-parents should be forced to quit smoking.

Now, about the problem of ones’ child mentally and psychologically. If a child has seen his or her parents smoke so frequently, their mind will give them a signal that smoking is totally okay. Since this kind of thought has been planted deep inside their young hearts since they were small, it won’t change the mindset of the kids however the teachers teach them when they are bigger. These kids will end up smoking. But as I know, most parents don’t want their kids to smoke like them because they know how addictive and bad it is. However, it’s already too late to regret. So why did you start it on your own? People always like to give excuses like that smoking is irresistible and addictive so they can’t quit smoking. Yep, and that’s the reason why we should enforce a law to FORCE parents to quit smoking.

Forcing smoker-parents to quit smoking is crucial for the sake of the health of children nowadays and for the sake of the mindset of the society. Therefore, smokers who become parents should definitely be forced to quit smoking.
