Should smokers who become parents be forced to give up smoking?

The detrimental effects of the smoker’s addict to their next generations has aroused public concerns in Hong Kong, and some even suggested an idea initiate a ban against parents smoking.

Well it’s a ‘Yes’ if you ask me.

  •   First off, smoking is an extremely detrimental activity to any human being, including their children and babies. It may lead to mental problems such as mood stimulations, raising one’s irritability, and lead to anxiety, which may affect their relationships with their youths. It’s still not the problem in our spotlight, people who can’t stop taking another puff from their cigarettes is very likely to suffer from the infamous and dreadful lung cancer, which they shall face death even earlier then they wanted. Smoking expectant mothers may even get children killed by supplying them with these highly toxic chemicals. There are already some cases out there of expectant mothers who are smokers killing their own children. Let’s assume you are that lucky as a smoker who still get to see your child, your child may be different from other healthy kids running out there. Also, if parents continued to smoke, fearless enough to do it in front of their children, don’t forget cigarettes also emits carbon monoxide and all sorts of toxic, inside the infamous second-hand smoke. They act negatively on children’s respiratory systems, destroying their health. According to the World Health Organization, Tobaccos of all kinds kills up to half of its users every single year, around 890 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. By looking at the facts, can you see how detrimental is that 5 centimeters cylinder to your precious life and children?
  •   Secondly, parents are the key role models in children’s lives. Don’t agree? Who taught them to speak up their first words? Who teaches them live morals? They are the crew who support of their children’s pirate ship. If a parent smoke in front of his children, or their children found it out, the child may be feeling disappointed with their parents, more radically, they may even turn their backs to the smoking parent, or even ignoring the commands and lectures they were given. That’s not the worse yet, if the children never learnt about detrimental effects of smoking. They may even share your box of cigarettes one day. Maybe you would be able to take the fact that you may die earlier, but you never would be able to take it if it’s your next generation. To be clear, if you smoke as a parent, you still don’t get that kid to listen to you. Not me, none of you would listen to a person, who’s older but worse than yourself. The rules apply here too.
  • Third, it causes economic problems. This may seem to happen very unlikely, but think, a box of those cigarettes cost from $50 to $70 Hong Kong Dollars. In some families without much income, this is a big issue. That amount of money can be used to buy food for the whole family, but stationary and books the child need, and do stuff more, than just buying toxic to threaten yourself and your loved ones. If the child saw his money for a new pen he wanted for a long time, but instead, his father bought a box of cigarettes, and broke the promise, do you think the child will see his father as a role model? Will he build trust or strengthen it between his parents and him anymore? The answers here, NO.

From these points, we can really observe the actual harm of a parent smoking, both to the parent themselves and to the children. Maybe you can find a way to oppose this idea, but at least I don’t think there’s ever a way better than banning these toxic to our future generations and their respective families.

  That’s it, I support it.
