Sports day

This year’s Carmel Secondary School Sports Day is the first time I attend it. Since I am a Form one student, I basically know nothing about the sports day arrangement.  Students in my grade were very excited and looked – forward for this activity, they kept on chatting about it for the past few days; of course I am one of them.

The weather on the first day was quite gloomy, thick clouds filled us the sky. Sports day started with all houses walking near the flag and Scouts started to march to the middle and followed by the cheering team and students. Then, the flag raising ceremony started, everyone was really quiet. After that, our principal, miss Ng presented a speech. She told us what sports she did before and an accident happened to her, which was quite serious that caused her to stop. Even though she stopped the sport but she encouraged us to do more exercise, and have a pleasant time while playing the sports.

The games started, the announcer started to call out for participants to assemble at the marshaling area. It started with track events, as the runners ran, students and teachers on the spectators stand started to cheer for their own houses and cheers filled the whole sports ground. As they hear the cheers, runners were motivated and ran faster and faster. I was so shocked with some of the games; because all the runners were so fast we cannot predict who would win. All the games went well and it was time for lunch, lots of students were looking forward for this because they were starving after the games.

But the weather wasn’t as good, after lunch, it was raining cats and dogs. So, the game was forced to stop. Everyone was so disappointed and all the teachers have to call the parents to inform them that the game was cancelled and asked for permission to let us leave early. But thank God, when we leave it stopped raining but the ground was very slippery.

The second day of sports day was the next week, the day before was quite cloudy but that day was sunny. Games started and then after the hurdles, non- sports team 8 x 50 meters relay started, there were lots of non- school teams, for example English Debating Team, Robotics Team and Scouts. Everyone cheered loudly, even the announce was shouting happily. All the last runners dashed to the finish line, at the end, Robotics Team was the champion.

The game went smoothly and it did not rain after lunch. Then, it was the most excited game of all – relay. It was the 4 x 400 meters relay and everyone rose to their feet and cheered loudly for their house. It was so exhausted for runners to run so long, after handing over the baton to their teammates, they were accompanied to the first-aid tent, they were very tired and their legs were hurting.

After the game, it was time for prize giving ceremony. A guest who was Carmel’s past student, and he was a volleyball trainer in our school. He told us about himself and talked about training volleyball. Then, a student announced it was time to present the prizes. Virtue, Loyalty and Intellect got prizes for best sportsman, Intellect got the first runner up for most prizes related to houses and Virtue was the champion! Since I am in the house Virtue, I was beyond and I was proud to be part of this house.

After participating in my first Carmel’s sports day, I am very grateful that I can participate inside and after hearing principal and the guest’s speech, I am motivated to work hard in everything, not only sports, This is the first time and I am looking forward for next years sports day!
