Sports Day

My first sports day in Carmel held in the past few days. The events were fantastic and I was really delighted. Although it is called ‘sports day’, there was not just a single day. There were two days for our sports day actually, which were the eighth of March and the fourteenth of March. And the location the sports day held was the Kowloon Tsai Sportsground. Our principal, Miss Ng, gave us an encouragement in the opening ceremony. She shared her experience of playing hockey and told us that we should not give up easily.

On the first day, the weather was not good. It rained in the afternoon and the events could not continue as the teachers planned before. Because of that, the final round for all events cancelled so the players were quite disappointed cause they had lost a chance to get a better result.

On the second day, the weather was much better than the first day. All the athletes looked full of vigor and energetic. I am a member of the Loyalty house and I have heard that our house was the champion of the sports day throughout the past six year so that I was awaited to see the senior schoolfellows’ heroic bearing.

The second day of the sports day was a substantial day since all the relays were held on that day! Also, it was my turn to join the match- softball. I was really nervous and worried because I knew that I must not the best one and I also hurt my arm on the day before. When it was my turn, I tried my best but I did not do it well enough. I attempt to be depressed, however I thought about Steve Jobs’ quote- If I tried my best and fail, well, I have tried my best. Nobody can success every single time and we always learn from past experience to improve ourselves. Therefore I cheered myself up and went back to the spectators’ stand.

After that, it was a special event- 8 × 50 school team relay. As a member of the robotics team, that’s a must to focus on the robotics team runners. At the very beginning, we were almost the last. However we chased up by baton to baton. Suddenly a tall man wearing the robotics team T-shirt appeared! He was the robotics team’s teacher in charge, Mr. Koo Yiu, he ran extremely fast! Finally we won the champion and I was really proud of that.

A few hours later, it was the highlight of the sports day- inter-house 12 × 200 relay. The atmosphere was heated in every single second. All of us stood up and cheered for our own house’s representative. About the middle part of the race, my house had become the last among the four houses and there was nearly 200 meters between the fastest house and my house! Time passed quickly, our 11th runner, Mai Ching Yan, tried hard and came to the third place. After a few seconds, the last runner, Chan Sum Yi, took the baton and rushed. The atmosphere was fired up and the sportsground was bustling with our cheering. Our runner ran marvelously fast! She passed through two other houses and breast the type! She was like our hero at that moment!

Then, it was the time for Teachers’ long run which was an event held for the teachers. The teachers could choose to run for 400 meters, 800 meters or 1200 meters. All the schoolmates were really excited to see the teachers to run, including me. We came down from our seats and went near by the fence since we were all looking forward to the start of the event. ‘3…2…1…beep!’ the event began! We kept searching for our teachers, especially our own class teachers and told to the one next to us. ‘Hey! You see! That’s Miss Jessica Wong!’ ‘Look! Mr. Tang and Mr. Koo are there!’ The sportsground was full of laugher and applause. And all the teachers finished their run successfully.

It came to the end of the sports day, an old teacher of Carmel had a speech in the closing ceremony. He told us that each of us can be bright and shines somedays as long as we pay our effort. Finally the teacher awarded the prizes to the MVPs and the best two houses. The best house was the Virtue house and the first- runner up was the Intellect house. My house’s teachers and committee members looked disappointed cause they could not kept the championship for the seventh year.

I think it was quite a treasured experience that I felt awesome and I knew much more about my school. I also learnt to keep positive and learn from the experience of failure. I have enjoyed a great time with my friends as well. I think I will never forget the two golden days.
