A Continuation of ‘When Caroline Went Away’

Louise’s bad dream
…next day, before I went shopping with mum, I found mum in a good mood. I really didn’t understand why it looked exactly okay with mum.

I asked her curiously, ‘ Why can you stop worrying about Caroline?’

She simply replied,’ Caroline? She is not my daughter any more!’

I gulped and choked. I kept coughing until mum patted my back hard. Then she pushed me back to my room and told me to get dressed in ten seconds. After dressing in a lightning-speed, we left home.

During shopping, I was really curious because she was now keen on teenagers’ clothes. She kept talking with the salesgirl and bought a pile of large-sized clothes.

I asked, ‘Why do you buy so many clothes?’

 ‘They are yours, sweetie.’

‘Mine? The clothes are too big!’  I stared at mum. Then I had a feeling that she still cared about Caroline.

After ages, we finally got out of the shop. Suddenly I saw a familiar face—it was Caroline! But I shivered. I saw some horrible men surrounding her. One of them hit her with a stick and Caroline’s squeal pierced my eardrum. I wanted to run towards them, but mum urged me to continue shopping.

After that, I shouted, ’Mum, why don’t you listen to me? There’s Caroline!’

Then I woke with a start. Tears and sweat were both streaming down my cheeks though it was only a dream. I really did not want this to come true.
