Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today’s motion is “With the rise in popularity of the Internet, newspapers will become a thing of the past.” I firmly support today’s motion and I am going to explain from three aspects.

To begin with, it is about flexibility. Unlike the newspapers which are printed every day at 5 o’clock in the morning with only news from the previous day on them, news are updated frequently on the web. Also, if you are not interested in scanning through paragraphs, some news items are presented in the form of animations that are much more attractive and allow one, especially children to be motivated to read news. Instead of buying a stack of bulky paper and carrying it in your bag all day, you just need a smartphone or tablet that most of you own one and you can keep yourself updated with the latest news on the Internet. Since news on the Internet is presented in a much more flexible way and make people’s lives easier, ordinary newspapers are becoming a thing of the past.

Nowadays people pay more attention to the conservation of the environment and that is why ordinary newspaper s would be replaced. From cutting trees, making paper, printing news on it with ink to transporting and delivering it to your hands, the whole process involves considerable amount of energy and natural resources. With more trees cut down and more non-renewable resources consumed, the problem of global warming would become more serious and we can’t maintain a sustainable lifestyle that is both best for us and our next generation. In contrast, uploading and reading news on the web saves a lot of paper and thus trees. The energy consumed is only a tree in the forest compared to the old way. With the rise in popularity of the Internet, people can live in a more environmentally friendly way and extend the life span of the planet.

Some people may be concerned about the health problems caused by the Internet since the blue light emitted by the monitors is the suspect of leading to short-sightedness and even eye defects such as glaucoma. People easily develop sore joint due to holding the same posture for a long time. It is undeniable that such consequences do exist. However by installing inexpensive filter on the monitor and regularly take a rest every fifteen minutes, we can eradicate the problem. On the other hand, ordinary newspaper also threatens our health. In order to prevent the ink from fading easily, cyanide is used for the purpose. If it accidentally goes into our body, it can cause irritation and even as serious as damaging our kidney! It is needless to day that the potential risks brought by newspapers are much more serious than that by the monitors.

After considering the flexibility of news, the conservation of the environment and the potential risks for our health, it is wise of us to utilize today’s technology and start using our gadgets to read news on the Internet. The more popular it is, the less harm will be posed on us and our environment. Therefore today’s motion must stand. Thank you.
