Why don’t you listen to me?

Parents nowadays concentrate on their work much more than before. They spend less time to communicate with their children. As a teenager myself, I think that the lack of parental communication leads to their misconceptions about teenagers.

Adults probably think they understand teenagers’ feelings. They think that we still live in the same lifestyle as they were. When we would like to express our opinions, they simply use the notorious phrase “We were young once too” to answer. Parents should not despise the difficulties we face. Although they were young once, it doesn’t mean all of us feel the same way about the same situation as they did. This misconception makes teenagers’ feel that they are insignificant.

In addition, parents often think teenagers only look for enjoyment. They think that we are not as hard-working as they used to be. Adults also think that we are being too laidback. However, many teenagers, in fact are willing to go extra miles to achieve what they are determined to get. Once we have a goal, we usually work hard to succeed. We resist different kinds of temptations and concentrate on our work. Parents should not think we don’t take initiative to prepare ourselves for future.

Both parents and teenagers should play a part to bridge the gap. Communication would be a great method for parents and teenagers to understand each other.

First of all, parents should not overlook teenagers’ feelings. They should listen to teenagers’ opinions. After understanding their children’s situation, parents should think of ways to help their children. As a teenager’s life is definitely not an easy one, care from parents is very important. This will surely sweep misunderstandings away.

Meanwhile, teenagers should be patient when they are listening to their parents. Youngsters should try their best to understand their parents’ perspective. This can clear up misunderstandings and narrow the gap.

I believe mutual respect and understanding from both parents and teens can help to alleviate the misconceptions. Let’s make an effort on it!
