Academic Excellence Could Mean Nothing

Nowadays, we, the employers, find a very ironic plight and this is very worrying. We learn that while many young people excel in public examination, they are little prepared for the reality of the world of work.

The most important thing that I am going to criticize is the sense of responsibility of the young people. Last Monday, I interviewed a young person who applied for the post of manager in my company. He sent his own profile to me to show his excellent academic performances, and to convince me that he was amount to the post. On the day of interview, to my surprise, he did not attend the interview on time and was late for half an hour. I certainly rejected his application after he arrived although the interview had not started. The thing is, when you engage in your work, the most important requirement is not your ability or academic result, but your responsibility and how decent you are. Without the basic quality, you will not excel in your work.

The next thing that raises one’s eyebrow is the lack of persistence. To be realistic, there are more and more graduates from different famous universities in the city now. Having a diploma in your hand can no longer earn you a well-paid job instantly. However, what I am seeing now is that a handful of graduates still overrate themselves a lot and think that they deserve more from their jobs. As a result, when assigned to do some ‘chore’ work, they do not show any serious and respectable attitude, and handle the work poorly. Some of them even drop out in the middle of their career.

If the situation goes on, I am really worried about the future of our fellow youngsters as they have got the potential but disposed of them like waste. Therefore, I would like to give some suggestions for our confused youngsters, and you, may be one of them.

First of all, all of you need is to be humble at work. Perhaps in school, you are always shining with your excellent exam result, but it is another case when you are at work. The people around you are all elites and experienced seniors. In this circumstance, your attitude rather than your ability matters. With a humble attitude, you will always place yourself at the lower rank and will not mind doing a lot more and enduring more criticism. And this was what our older generation did in the early tough period. Only by this can you earn others’ admiration and trust.

The next tip is to persist. All of you grow up in the materialistic world. Without the experience of bearing grief, a lot of you cannot survive under hard work and pressure. And yet, our society does not need the ones giving up easily. So, when you face extreme hardship and obstacles, please bite the bullet and do your best. After that, there will be a golden sky behind and you will find it is all worth it. In order to achieve this, you had better locate your real interests and your favourable occupations when you are still young. The interests then become your unshakable power of will. No matter how difficult the time is, you can surely tolerate it and paint your future.

In a word, do not look up to yourself too much even when you get superbly bright exam results as your workplace will be another challenging battlefield. Please bear in mind that in order to adjust to the world of work, your attitude does matter. And the way out is to be humble and persistent.
