Write a letter to the press telling why the ads for slimming products must be banned.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my discontent to the ads for slimming products, which have soared in recent years and ought to be banned.

Firstly, these ads imply that being slim is equal to being beautiful. It is true that being overweight is bad, but being underweight is not good for health, either. Unluckily, most people are misled by the advertisements, considering that they cannot be beautiful unless they are slim—the slimmer, the better. However, we must realize that being fat is not a sin, and beauty is not simply judged from the appearance—the inner beauty is more important. As the ads are brainwashing people, turning them to idiots who only pursue to be slim, they must be banned.

Secondly, the ads are deceiving consumers. It is not hard to find that those unscrupulous businessmen use different tactics to cheat consumers, for example, exaggeration, fake photos, not revealing the side effects of their products, and so on. As a result, many consumers are cheated, finding that the products they have bought are actually trash. Some of them even take the slimming medicines that have serious side-effects, which causemental or physical illnesses. In extreme cases, deaths are even resulted!

Since currently there is no way to solve this problem completely without banning all ads, my suggestion becomes a necessary evil. However, some people may argue that Consumer Council has been spotting the bad products and reporting them to the public, so we need not worry much about the deceiving ads.Yet, Consumer Council may help, but prevention is better than cure. It will be too late to report them after thousands of consumers fall prey to them. Moreover, the undesirable trend of ‘slimness is beauty’ would not be stopped without getting rid of the culpritthe ads.

All in all, slimming ads are demons. They brainwash the customers, making them think that they must be slim and finally, the ones who benefit are those unscrupulous businessmen. The consumers are fooled to buy the products that are useless, and may even be harmful. Therefore, slimming ads must be banned.

                  Yours faithfully

Chris Wong
