Good morning everyone! I am the chairman of the Social Concern Club. First of all, I would like to ask all of you a question. What will you be doing after 50 years? Will you be living in a big house enjoying your retired lives? Or working hard to earn a living?

Everyone wants to have a happy life. However, the elderly nowadays suffer from many problems. The plight of them is very serious.

The first problem they face is the financial problem. Old people are not as energetic as young people. They cannot find jobs with good conditions and not many people are willing to employ them. Therefore, they can just sell old things or collect paper and cans to earn a living. Of course, they cannot earn much from these. However, they have to afford high rent, expensive food price, medical fee and so on.  It is difficult for them to live with such little money.

Another serious problem is health. It is easy for the elderly to get sick. Little accidents or illness will make them have very serious health problems. It is not easy for them to get well within a short time. And they need other people to take care of them in this period. However, according to some researches, many old people in Hong Kong live alone. Their sons and daughters need to work and take care of their own families. They rarely visit the elderly. If there is any accident, they may face serious consequences as no timely aid can be offered to them. Moreover, the elderly have little money. Seeing the doctor is a burden to them. Therefore, some old people don’t go to see the doctor even if they get sick. And it is very dangerous to them.

What can we do to help them? Let me share some ways with you.

You can donate money to some charity organizations. These organizations can help use the money wisely like distributing lunchboxes to the poor elderly and giving them some necessities.

Furthermore, you can do voluntary work like visiting old people who live alone or live in elderly homes. It is the best way to know more about the problems they face and give some happiness and blessings to them.

The elderly have put great effort in improving our society in the past, so it’s time for them to enjoy the rest of their life. Let’s take action now!
