There are many characters in the book “Holes”. If I could give a present to any one of them, I would choose to give a Mathematics textbook to Zero.
First of all, Zero has a strong sense of numbers. When he asked Stanley to teach him the alphabet, he could figure out how many letters there are in a minute by using different Mathematics skills such as multiplying and dividing. Even Stanley is surprised about it. I think it is good for Zero to learn Mathematics because he is a fast-learner and I believe he can catch up with the things taught in schools soon.
Moreover, practicing Mathematics can help him to build character. It takes a lot of time for anyone to do things better and Math is not an exception. He needs to put plenty of time and efforts in order to learn and improve his knowledge. During his studying, he will learn how to be patient and not to give up easily while getting puzzled of a question. Also, he will know that the importance of being hardworking since it is the only method for him to study well.
Furthermore, I know that he does not like to answer questions so he seldom talks. However, it is not good for him to be like that as his communication techniques will be poor. Studying Maths may help eliminate the problem. Since he will meet difficulties during his self-learning, it is a must for him to seek help from others actively; otherwise, no one would know that and come and help him. Therefore, there will be an improvement when he communicates with anyone.
Rather than the above reasons, it is also a time for him to develop his interest. If he is good at Mathematics, he may find that it is interesting. He can have fun in it and learn something useful at the same time so I think it is appropriate for me to give him a Mathematics textbook.
For the present, I expect him to use it for self-learning. He should study it day by day and bit by bit. I hope that he can be hardworking and spot out how funny that Maths is. The most important thing is to learn some skills which he needs to apply in his daily life and it may also help him to prepare for his future career.
