Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my opinions towards examination.

Every school has examinations. Examinations are the test of knowledge or ability. From my perspective, examinations encourage students to learn and it is necessary to have examinations regularly.

First of all, examinations provide a positive competition between students. Students can know about their own ranking among the whole form through examinations. They may compete with each other according to their form ranks. Furthermore, they may even do revisions and teach each other in order to get improvement together in the next examination. Examinations encourage students to work harder, learn together and compete with each other positively.

Secondly, we have every reason to say that examinations further expand students’ scope of learning. They will learn in different ways and study different subjects. For example, if some students are just interested in Science, they may only focus on reading Science books. They may even only concentrate on the lessons that they like. Examinations make students focus not only on the subject they like, but several different subjects. They will become knowledgeable because of the learning in different subjects. It encourages students to learn.

Finally, examinations improve students’ learning attitude. Most of the students will study the textbooks, concentrate on the lessons and try to understand deeply just because they need to deal with examinations. Examinations do not only test students’ memory but the understanding in the subjects. There will be some questions in the exams which students need to apply what they have learnt in the lessons and the textbooks. Students need to interpret the information and use it correctly, in order to pass or get high marks in examinations. Students will not just recite all the books but try to understand them. They will ask questions actively in the lessons when they do not understand something. It encourages students to learn actively but not just recite information. Students’ attitude towards learning will improve.

Some people may argue that examinations give students too much stress. Undeniably, that is true. However, an appropriate amount of stress is necessary. Students may even get improvement under stress.

In conclusion, examinations encourage students to learn more, students will not just learn what they are interested in but every subject. Besides, examinations provide a positive competition according to the exam rankings. Students may teach each other and get improvement together. Also, examinations make students more active in learning. In order to understand what the teachers have taught and answer questions correctly in exams, students will ask questions during the lessons. According to the above points, I strongly agree that examinations encourage students to learn.
