Diary of a Child in Uganda

Dear Dairy,

What a weather it is! It’s raining and the roof is leaking again! Father just fixed it a week ago. Sigh. I wish could have a more comfortable house and that it would stop pouring.

Our house is quite small and doesn’t have rooms. There’s a small table and a little stool father made. We sleep on the ground at night, with a thin blanket to cover my mom, dad and me at night.

I also wish we could go to school. I have a friend whose parents have enough money for her to go to school. She said you could learn a lot of things at school and that you could make many friends. It was obvious that a lot could be learnt at school, because without her, I would never have known how to write and keep a diary! Unfortunately, my parents can’t support the school fees.

But we can’t have everything we want. I’m already quite lucky. Many children are orphans, and they unlike me, have never known the love of a family. Many people’s conditions are worse. They don’t have a shelter and they barely have enough food to scrap by.

Though we are poor, we are better off than many others. We have each other. I will cherish what we have now.
