Learning English through popular culture – holding a surprise party

Dear Shelley,

How are you lately? I miss you so much! So many fascinating things have happened after you left, how I wish you were here to share my joy!

Do you remember ‘Surprise of Your Life’ on TVB, the interesting show that we used to watch together? You always admired how the participants could arrange a surprise for others, and you even spent hours telling me how much you wanted to join it! Guess what? I got the chance, and arranged a surprise birthday party for dad! Yes! There’s nothing wrong with your eyesight. I arranged a party for our old man who hates parties! It’s unbelievable, isn’t it?

I handed in the application form last month right after you left. TVB called me and told me that we were chosen, so we could be in the TV show. It’s a pity that you couldn’t join it with me.

It was really challenging to plan everything on my own; I really wished you were here to help out! I decided to hold the party for dad at the café in the hotel where he works, since he’s always so busy and can never leave the hotel.

I contacted as many friends and relatives as possible, and TVB used the title ‘TVB staff party’ to book the whole café for the night, so that nobody in the hotel would know that a party for dad would be held!

Apart from that, mom helped as well, by calling dad’s secretary and colleagues to join in the surprise event.

On the birthday, mom and I arrived early with the TVB crew, and we decorated the café with daisies. ( haha, you know why, right?)Then we baked an enormous cake with the help of the café pastry chef, simply marvellous!

Then all the family members and friends arrived, and sticking to the plan, dad’s colleagues came at 6pm, when they were supposed to be starting a meeting with dad! Everyone hid in the kitchen, ready for the surprise.

The band hired by TVB played really loud music, and the noise of the banging of drums travelled up to dad’s office, which was exactly what we wanted. Since all the hotel staff were hiding with us, dad had to come downstairs himself to see what was going on. The funniest part was that there was a hidden camera recording every action of dad, and we all saw clearly how mad he was!

When he arrived at the café, he started sneezing crazily (remember the daisies?) and because of his nose allergy, he got even angrier! He stomped up to the band and asked them what was going on. At that point, the lights were turned off and we all rushed out, carrying the huge cake! You should have seen his face! It was hilarious! He was really puzzled and shocked by our surprise!

We had a terrific evening, and the party was a great success. When we got home, dad kept telling me off for ruining his scheduled meeting, but both mom and I could tell that he was really blissful and pleased. We’ve watched the broadcast on TV just now and dad kept complaining since he didn’t know it would be shown on TV! He said it was very embarrassing! Go quickly to tvb.com to watch the program! I’m sure you’ll laugh off your head!

Let’s also plan a party for mom when you’re back in June! Miss you!

Yours,
Nicky
