A day as a coffee shop assistant

I always dream of being a coffee shop assistant, since I think it should be an enjoyable job. Last summer vacation, I got the chance to do so, as my mother invited me to stand in for her sick shop assistant for a day. I did not hesitate for even one second because I thought it might be an excellent experience.

I went to work on time, and got ready to face my first challenge – to take orders. I walked towards the customers with a smile, tried to be polite and friendly, and asked ‘Sir, may I help you?’ The man started to speak – so fast that I could not catch up, and with a board accent that I could not understand what he was saying. I was so nervous and finally I got help from another waiter, Joey. Joey helped me to take the order.  I found that I might not be suitable for taking orders, so I went to the beverage counter to see whether anyone needed help.

Mum asked me to brew a cup of latte, but I did not know how to do so. In my mind, all kinds of coffee were the same so I was so confused. However, with Mum’s help, I succeeded in making the first cup of latte. I could see my customer look so joyful when drinking the cup of coffee made by me!

Then it came to the easiest part for me on that day – tidy up the table. That basically was no different from what I do at home every day. I put all the used utensils onto my tray carefully, making sure that I would not drop them on the floor. After that, I cleaned the table with my towel and put a new set of utensils on the table. I did all these scrupulously. After finishing this part, I took all the used utensils to the sink, and my next job started
.
I always hate washing dishes the most, as the detergent makes my hands so rough. However, I did not have any other choice at that moment. I tried to make sure every cup or dish I washed was clean, although it increased my workload a lot. However, after an hour, I eventually cleaned all the utensils.  When I looked at the clock, it was already 5 o’clock! I could leave finally!

After a day of being a coffee shop assistant, I found it was quite tiring and it was not easy for an ordinary school girl like me at all. It required some communication skills and I needed to be serious and careful when working. Although it is not an easy day, it is still an unforgettable experience for me.
