The Life of a Red Packet

Hello, everyone! I am a red packet. I have a red body with my owner’s family name embossed on my body. During the Chinese New Year, I am very popular and I can bring blessings and joy to people especially children.

During the Chinese New Year, everyone is in a happy mood. One day, my owner put on pretty clothes and went out with me. She carefully fed me with a one-hundred-dollar note and put me in her bag before going out. I was full and felt happy.

‘I will have a happy day!’ I thought.

When she arrived at her relative’s home, I heard some noise and they started to greet each other with words of luck and blessing. My owner suddenly took me out from her bag and gave me to a boy.

‘Oh no! Where am I going?’ I screamed.

The boy laughed and put me into his pocket. It was dark and I saw many friends there! Then we started talking.

‘Hey! You are so pretty! You wear an outfit in gold color! It’s sensational,’ I said.

‘Please don’t envy me! I am so depressed although my owner picked this outfit especially for me,’ she replied sadly.

I asked my friends, who were arguing among themselves who the most beautiful packet was, to be quiet so that we could all listen to the sad gold packet. She told me that people would throw us away after taking the money out.

I felt hopeless that I couldn’t see my owner again and would be thrown away soon. We were lying in the boy’s packet waiting for death. At night, the boy took my friends and me out from his pocket. I felt a great pain and it seemed that I couldn’t breathe! Afterwards, he took the money from us one by one and put us aside carefully. While the boy was counting the money, I talked with my friends again.

‘My dear friends! I don’t want to die so quickly. Please help me!’ I cried.

‘Stop! That’s enough. I must escape! Will anybody join me?’one tall red packet with gold glitter said.

We discussed the plan of escape quietly while the boy was counting the money. Then, the boy picked us up so we started to flee but suddenly, we heard the boy talking to his mother.

‘What should I do with these red packets?’

They boy’s mother replied him, ’Oh, my dear son. It is not good for the environment if we just simply throw them away. Maybe we can use them to make something to decorate our home.’

After we heard this, all of us yelled but I didn’t want others to hear me so I covered my mouth at once contentedly! The boy nodded his head excitedly.

I felt so surprised and pleased since I was still useful in this world.
