I watched a movie called Secondhand Lions last Friday. It is a family movie which is suitable for all ages. It is a story that takes place on rural Texas in the summer of 1962. The movie records the adventures of Walter Caldwell and his two bachelor great-uncles, who are rumored to have a secret fortune. They are not pleased to see the arrival of Walter initially before they become acquainted with each other thoroughly. Moreover, there is a strong cast in this movie. Many well-known actors star in it, such as Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. Robert Duvall, who acts as Uncle Hub, has won a lot of remarkable awards in his career. Michael Caine, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2000 to appreciate his contribution in cinema, has a lot of nominations in different ceremonies. The director of this movie, Tim McCanlies is an experienced director and screenwriter who had directed many different genres of movie. He is born in Texas. This explains why he is interested in directing this film. Besides, the director also adopts many young and professional actors in the movie. Haley Joel Osment, who plays the role of Walter, is one of them. Although he does not earn any awards from the movie of Secondhand Lions, he is still a young and potential actor. He has performed in several Hollywood films and he is wonderful in the role of Walter. All of them have performed well in this movie. The movie is so hilarious and funny. It is easy to draw the attention of the audience. Besides, the Secondhand Lions had been nominated in several ceremonies.
This movie is related to the life and the adventures of Walter and his two great-uncles. They are Uncle Garth and Uncle Hub. Walter is a shy and shame boy. Unfortunately, he is sent by his irresponsible and deceptive mother to live with his two wealthy but curious uncles in Texas. After acquainting the story of Jasmine and the mysterious adventures of his two uncles, such as the assassination and kidnapping, he gets closer with them and starts another new speculative experience with his two uncles. He learns a lot from his uncles and his uncles also acquire an inspiration of their lives from his great nephew while he is living in Texas with them.
Throughout the movie, I think you will be able to figure out that there is a strong tie of friendship between Uncle Garth and Uncle Hub. They had made a lot of incredible experiences together. They had once fought in the First World War. However, Uncle Hub is not satisfies with life and feels regrettable of his past. On the other hand, Walter is a bashful boy who is always disappointed with his mother and her fallacious promises. She does not deserves and treat Walter as a son. She always thinks that he is a burden and barrier that hinder her new life. After Walter lives with his two uncles. He learns to be a man and to believe in something. The “what every boy needs to know about being a man” speech of Uncle Hub inspires him to strengthen himself and become mentally stronger. Meanwhile, he also plays am important role in relighting and refreshing the lives of his uncles. They work out new perspectives on their lives after getting along with this young and bashful boy. They are animated by the spirit of Walter. It makes me laugh all the time because of curious behaviors of the two uncles, such as shooting at the visiting salesman. However, it also makes me cry about the situation of Walter and the tragedy between Jasmine and Uncle Hub. I really hope they can live together and Jasmine can stick around Uncle Hub. This movie is realistic and informative. However, you may also feel confused about its setting since the movie will travel through the past and present. Besides, you may also feel exaggerated in some parts of the movie, such as keeping an old loon as a pet. Apart from these crazy activities, I also admire and enjoy the storyline of the movie as it consists of both touching and exciting elements. Therefore, I strongly recommend this movie to you as it is worth seeing. Finally, I suggest you bringing some Kleenex if you are going to watch this movie as you will be vivified by the story.
