Topic: Many old people in Hong Kong are poor and very often live alone in old buildings with inadequate living conditions.  Reports of physical abuse of old people by family members are increasing.  Write an article discussing the difficulties old people face nowadays.  Suggest ways the Government, community groups and families can take better care of the elderly
Help the elderly to tackle their difficulties
It seems that Hong Kong is a prosperous city. However, there are still many people, especially the elderly who live in harsh conditions. In effect, we always neglect their needs. Should we put more emphases on the old people from now on?

The elderly are fraught with considerable difficulties nowadays.  The most prevailing one is financial problem. Although the government has already provided different subsidies, such as the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme and Old Age Allowance Scheme, the majority of old people have not enough money to deal with daily expenses.  Each of them can only receive not more than three thousand dollars per month.  The inflation rate keeps on rising in Hong Kong, how can these elderly survive?

Moreover, many old people lack self-care ability.  Some of them are disabled; they fail to move conveniently. Besides, a lot of old people have poor eyesight because of presbyopia or other illnesses. Hence, they cannot take care of themselves effectively. Health problem is one of the difficulties that they need to face.

What is more, it is difficult for the elderly to get along or communicate with their families. Because of the generation gap, they may have different attitudes and behaviour. In addition, their families may be very busy, so they have no time to communicate with the old people. Some of the sons and daughters may even send their fathers or mothers to the residential care homes. The elderly need to lead solitary lives.

Can anyone understand the plight of the elderly and help them to improve their existence?
Firstly, the government should provide more social welfare to give financial support to the elderly. For instance, raising the amount of the subsidies is needed in order to help them improve their existence. Besides, the government should appeal to the people for taking care of their elderly by using different methods, such as advertising. This can enhance their awareness of caring for the old people.

Secondly, community groups can visit some elderly who live alone. This is a great chance to talk with them and know about their daily lives. Besides, community groups can try to help the elderly to improve their living standards. For example, we may help them to replace the light bulbs and clean their houses, or install some new equipment by finding sponsors to support.

Some old people may feel bored, so community groups may consider hosting activities for them, such as picnics and parties. The elderly will manage to enjoy meaningful lives. Meanwhile, they can have opportunities to meet new friends.

Thirdly, families have to pay more attention to their elderly parents, understanding more their physical fitness and feelings. People should try to spare some time for communicating with the elderly and taking them out. For example, we can go to restaurants and have "dim sum" with them. They will be gratified to know that their families really care about them.

The elderly have made great contributions to society and their families. Therefore, the government and their families should show respect and concern for the elderly, helping them to encounter their difficulties.
