More and more teenagers and young adults are putting a call to a plastic surgeon. They think that having cosmetic surgery helps boost self-confidence and some even consider that it is a significant step before seeking a job of good prospect. However, is it really worth having that? Before coming up to an answer, we should discuss the pros and cons of having plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery is a kind of medical treatment which repairs or restores body parts, such as eyelid, eyebag and nose. These treatments include skin whitening, acne scar removal and eyebag removal. Moreover, some injectable drugs such as botox, are very popular to rejuvenate the skin and refine the shape of the face.

Let us first examine the advantages of undergoing plastic surgery. Having plastic surgery could help boost self-confidence. It may help you look more attractive. When you attend a job interview, your appearance is usually to assess your character and even your work ability, and whether you have confidence or not. For example, a fresh graduate has a flat nose, a pair of single eyelids and her face muscles are flappy since she was born. She always hanged her head in front of others because she lacked confidence. After undergoing plastic surgery, she is brave enough to face others with eye-contact as her self-confidence is boosted. When she attends an interview, the interviewer thinks that she is self-assured and so she is employed. Therefore, to a certain extent, improving one’s appearance is a key to success.

However, there are two sides of a coin. Having plastic sugery has its disadvantages too. Firstly, people could get addicted easily after undergoing the first attempt. Michael Jackson is a good example. He had had plastic surgery many times since he was very young. He first wanted to change his appearance because of his black skin. He did not mind doing lots of operations as he was getting richer. However, he got obsessed with the operations. Although having surgery may boost one’s self-confidence, he may find it difficult to restrain himself from booking the next one.

Secondly, people undergoing plastic surgery may get many side-effects. There are many cases that the patient’s face muscles are numb. They may also catch the skin diseases and the wounds may be inflected easily. Patients must be very careful after the surgery. Otherwise, their appearances may be worse than before and their self-esteem may be even much lower than before. Is it worth doing something that is even harmful to oneself?

Problems may arise if plastic surgery becomes a trend in society. Wrong message may be spread to the fresh graduates. They may misunderstand that having plastic surgery is a significant step before entering job market. Young adults may believe that money could solve all problems. Work ability would not be considered in the interviews anymore. At last, everyone in the society would think that money is strongly related to the appearance. No one would consider the work ability anymore.

In my opinion, having plastic surgery should not be seen as a front for the youngsters before seeking job. While I agree that having good appearance to an interview is very important, I cannot support the young adults to undergo beauty operations. I think the ability and professional skills are the most desirable elements in the interviews. Youngsters had better think deeply whether having surgery is a worthwhile career investment. I hope the public will emphasise on the real professional skills rather than being artificially beautiful.
