A letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my opinions about the phenomenon among the young people.
A few surveys which were recently conducted showed that the young people consider money as the main cause of happiness and it is a very important thing to them. They link their happiness and goals to money. However, Hong Kong is a materialistic and highly commercialized city. It is common for people to show off their wealth with brand-name bags, accessories and other fancy products. Many people think that owning these items is seen as a sign of success. When the young people witness this attitude daily, they will develop a strong desire of having more money to buy expensive brand-name products. Therefore, it is inevitable for the young people to value money.
However, the joy of buying these luxury goods will not last long. Those young people have to buy new products to make them feel happy soon. Not only is it a waste of money but it is also a waste of time.
Everyone wants to have a higher living standard. Earning more money can improve one’s living standard. I understand why young people treat “owning a property” and “earning more money” as their top two goals but I think they have to strike a balance between their studies, work and family. Also, they should consider their present situation, then work hard to achieve their goals, instead of dreaming without taking actions.
Money is not everything. It cannot buy family love or buy friendship. I think the schools and parents should teach the young people the right values and morals. The young people should also find a right balance between their studies, work and family. Money is necessary for our living but having more of it does not mean having a better life. Having a suitable balance between work and life is the most important thing of having happiness and achievements.

                                                      Yours faithfully,
Vivian Ng
