Hong Kong education is famous for being stressed. Exams and tests fill up the timetable of students. As the result, some Hong Kong students may want to study overseas to enjoy a better learning environment. If you are one of these students, you need to know clearly the pros and cons of studying abroad before you make any decisions.

First, English is an international language, studying abroad can help students to improve their English. Students are exposed to an English speaking environment, no matter chatting with friends, ordering food, they need to use English to communicate with foreigners. Because thy have lots of chances to practice English, they can improve their English quickly.

Second, studying overseas may broaden student’s horizon. Students can experience other cultures such as food, festivals and traditions. Foreign countries have totally different lifestyle from Hong Kong. For example, the atmosphere of Halloween is much stronger in foreign countries, students may have lots of fun in it. These are not just for fun, experience different cultures and metting new friends benefit the future career too. Student have good social network and more common topics with people, improving their interpersonal communication skill may help to boost their future career.

In addition, student students need to leave their family and study overseas by themselves, they can learn to be independent. Normally, students will stay in a host family or dormitory. They have to take care of themselves, such as cooking, washing clothes and tidying their bedrooms. In Hong Kong, some families have maids and parents who take good care of them. Studying abroad provides a good chance for teenagers to be independent.

However, a coin always has two sides. Studying abroad also has drawbacks.

The bigger problem of studying abroad is the expensive fee. In Hong Kong, the government provides twelve-year education for free for teenagers but if studying in foreign schools, parent need to pay, and the fee is expensive. Not everyone can afford it. Furthermore, the cost of living can be very high. For example, the price of McDonald’s of a Big Mac Set in Hong Kong is $20 but in France, it can be sold at $40. It cost a lot to send a child to study abroad.

Besides, student may not be happy to stay in a strange environment. Some student may find it difficult to adapt to new places. Different classmates, food weather can bring a huge cultural shock to teenagers. They may suffer from homesickness. If you want to study overseas, please consider your ability of adapting to new environment.
