That night, an evil spirit possessed me (1C Onwufuju Jenet Chinonso)

It was a dark and stormy night. The wind was howling loudly, and the rain was pouring. Someone was knocking on the door, and I went downstairs to answer whoever was at the door.

‘Who is it?’ I yelled in an annoyed tone.

‘Hi, sweetie! It’s me, your mum.  I left my keys on my dresser. Could you open the door for me, please?’ Mum said.

So I opened the door, and Mum walked in with a big smile on her face, and it seemed like she was in a good mood, which was weird because Mum usually wouldn’t be this enthusiastic after she came home from work, but I shrugged it off because Mum was rarely in a good mood these days.

As I closed the door, Mum turned around. She said, ‘What would you like to ear for dinner, Sweetie?’ she asked in a warm and cheerful tone but the expression on her face suggested otherwise. Although she was smiling, her smile was creepy and sinister.

‘The leftover spaghetti from yesterday would be fine, Mum,’ I said quickly, not wanting to look at her gaze any longer.

After Mum finished preparing dinner, we both sat at the dinner table, eating quietly. As I was eating my leftover spaghetti, Mum kept staring at me with an emotionless expression on her face. To be honest, the way she was acting and the way she kept staring at me was starting to scare me a lot and the silence was just making me more scared, so I decided to start a conversation to break the eerie silence.

‘So how was work, Mum?’

‘Work was good. It was actually quite fun,’ she said, while smiling creepily and tilting her head to the side. ‘How was school, Sweetie? she asked.

‘Um school was good,’ I said while chuckling nervously. Anyway, I was a bit tired, so I thought I should go to bed. I faked a yawn. ‘Goodnight, Mum,’ I said while going up the stairs to my room.

‘Alright, good night, Sweetie.’

When I finally got into my room, I let out a sigh of relief and went to my bed, snuggling under soft warm blankets. A few hours later, I heard someone coming, so I pretended to be asleep. Turns out it was Mum. Mum then sat on my bed and stroked my hair gently and said in a demonic voice, ‘Foolish child. Thank you for bringing me into the human world with the Ouija board. Now I will wreak havoc on the human world. I just need to possess your body.’ Then she walked away while laughing. After hearing that, I was scared for my life.

The next day, I got ready for school and ran out of the house without even bothering to say good morning. When I got to school, I immediately went to find my friend, Jessica, whom I played the Ouija board with last week. When I finally found her, I pulled her aside into a corner and said we needed to talk.

‘So what do you want to talk about?’ she asked.

‘Do you remember when we played with the Ouija board last week?’ I asked.

‘Yea, why?’ she asked.

‘Have you been experiencing anything weird lately then?’ I asked.

‘Well, my parents have been acting weird since last night,’ she said, confirming my suspicion.

‘My mum’s been acting weird too,’ I said. ‘Do you think evil spirits from the Ouija boards possessed our parents?’ I asked.

‘No! That’s crazy! Evil spirits aren’t real. They’re probably having a good week at work. How about we confront them about their strange behaviour after school?’ she suggested.

‘That sounds good,’ I said.

After school, I walked to my doorstep and nervously opened the door. As I entered the house, I saw a trail of blood and almost threw up because I hated the sight of blood. The smart thing to do was to run out of the house and call the cops but being the foolish girl I am, I decided to follow the trail that eventually led to my mother’s bedroom. I nervously opened the door and what I saw was terrifying…I saw two dead bodies on the floor and my mum devouring an arm.

‘M…Mum!’ I stuttered, horrified at what I saw.

‘Oh! Hi, Sweetie!’ Mum said as she turned around. Her face, hands and clothes were covered in blood, then she started walking towards me.

‘S…Stay back!’ I screamed in fear.

‘Now, now. Is that any way to talk to your mother?’ it said.

‘You are not my mother!’ I yelled in fear and anger.

‘Well, then it looks like play time’s over, so there’s no more reason for me to wear my human suit,’ it said in a demonic voice as black smoke sizzled from my mother’s body.

When the evil spirit’s body fully formed, it let out an ear-piercing screech. I started running for my life without looking back. Just as I was almost at the hallway that leads to the front door, the evil spirit suddenly appeared in front of me.

‘Foolish girl, did you really think that you could run from me?’ it said then it laughed evilly. As I looked around and realised it was impossible for me to escape, I looked down and accepted my demise with tears rolling down my face. As the evil spirit possessed me, the last thing that could be heard from me was a blood-curdling scream. So, moral of the story, don’t play with demonic things.
