The development of children has long been the biggest parental concern either in the past or in the present-day world. That is why advertisements about products that facilitate children’s growth are so popular and eye-catching to parents. And hence, it is not uncommon to see that they spare no effort to strive for ways which can be used to cultivate their children effectively. However, most of them overlook the qualities and skills that are important for their children to be successful individuals. Thus, teenagers under such kind of supervision are inclined to be bookish, examination-oriented, and they may even learn everything by rote. But what are the required qualities and skills?
No matter being a student or an employee, it is universally acknowledged that the key to eminence is diligence. We can see tutorial schools promising to offer courses that can equip students with the best skills for exams everywhere. But what this result in is that students are indoctrinated with exam-oriented thinking and they long for shortcuts to success. However, being the winners in the exams does not mean that we are well-equipped to face different kinds of challenges. In contrast, those who are studious and anxious for learning new things will be able to succeed as they can acquire more knowledge from experiencing more and hence enhance their ability to overcome hurdles.
Other than that, to be successful individuals, one should be active as well. Take learning as an example, if we obtain knowledge only when our teachers ask us to do so, we will never be able to learn more by ourselves because we will not be under teachers’ close supervision all the time. This is the reason why we should be active in learning by reading materials other textbooks or joining extra-curricular activities. In our daily life, we should also be active in grabbing different kinds of opportunities in order to gain more experience. By doing this we can be successful individuals because we are experienced in tackling various sorts of problems.
Apart from these qualities, certain skills are needed for us to be successful such as communication skills. As we are all living in a society, what we have to do every day is to communicate with others so as to express and understand feelings and opinions. Having good relationship with others implies that we should have well-developed communication skills. And when we are able to develop good relationship with others, it is easier for us to cooperate with others in order to have accomplishment. Therefore, it is palpable that communication skills are required for one to be successful.
Moreover, leadership skills are indispensable to one for becoming a successful individual. Although successful individuals are not necessarily leaders, they should be able to lead others and make correct decisions alone. This is because we often have cooperation with other people in society no matter whether we are learning or working. For tasks to be successfully completed, a person with good leadership skills including decision-making skills is needed. Consequently, developing children’s leadership skills will be helpful for them to become a successful individual in the future.
Not only should we know these required qualities and skills for children to be successful, but we should also explore appropriate means in order to cultivate them. Undeniably, encouraging children to participate in more activities will be one of the effective means. By doing this, children will become more active as they are motivated. Through different kinds of competitions and discussions, they can also achieve betterment in communicating with and leading others as well. If awards are give for motivation purpose, they may also become more hard-working.
Besides, it is advisable for parents to act as role models for their children. This is because youngsters are highly suggestible during adolescence. If their parents set a good example for them, they are likely to follow what their parents do. And hence, good qualities and skills can be developed. On the contrary, if their parents do not show a good example to them, everything said by their parents will not be convincing at all. And this will make parental education ineffective as the children will not believe what their parents have said.
Undoubtedly, there are far more kinds of qualities, skills and methods for the children to become successful individuals in the future. What parents should do is to look for the strengths and weaknesses of their children and try to use different ways to boost the development of their children. Subsequently, children can grow in a better way and succeed more easily.
