“It’s better to be an only child than one with siblings.” Do you agree?

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my opinions about whether it is better to be an only child or one with siblings. Nowadays, many couples tend to have one child because of limited time and money. I would like to look at this issue from the point of view of a child.

It is obvious that the only child could receive better education and more attention from their parents. It is because there is no one to share resources with the only child, so parents may have sufficient fund to arrange different activities for the only child. However, the only child could get full attention and concern from his or her parents. Therefore, the only child could grow with undivided love and attention from parents.

However, the only child may be spoiled by parents who concentrate all their love on him. For example, when the only child misbehaves, parents may not punish him or her heavily because they love the only child so much. Eventually, parents may pamper the only child.

On the other hand, some families prefer having more than one child.

It would seem that children living with brothers and sisters feel less lonely and usually have a happier life at home. Undoubtedly, children who have brothers and sisters could share their happiness and sadness with their siblings. Furthermore, children could play games with their siblings even though their parents are busy. Through getting along with siblings, children could learn how to cooperate or communicate with others.

On the contrary, children with siblings are having greater possibility to quarrel with one another. Take my brother and me as an example. I tend to have conflicts with him every week. That brings lots of troubles to my parents.

In conclusion, I would choose to have brothers and sisters. It is because having siblings could bring the children more love and concern. In addition, we are living in a crowded city, so it is important for us to cooperate and communicate with others. The one with siblings could help each other to overcome difficulties getting along with other people. Therefore, it is better to be the one with siblings.

Yours truly,
Chris Wong
