Book Title: The Land of Stories-The Wishing Spell

Publisher: Little, Brown

Author: Chris Colfer

The Wishing Spell is an inspiring book that teaches us not to give up. The story is about the adventure of the Bailey twins, Alex and Conner. They accidentally fell into the Land of Stories, where fairytales were real. The learnt that they had to collect the Wishing Spell items to go back home. Meanwhile, the infamous Evil Queen was collecting the items too. After knowing about the twins, she decided to capture them. Unluckily, the twins were captured right after they had collected all the Wishing Spell items. The Evil Queen used the Wishing Spell, which meant that the twins were stranded in the Land of Stories forever. At last, their grandmother turned out to be the Fairy Godmother and transported the twins back home.

This book teaches me not to give up as the twins were optimistic. Even before the twins fell into the Land of Stories, they had a bad life. Their father died in a car crash and they were forced to move to a smell rental house. Allowance and presents became their dreams. But still, they were positive. On their birthday, they received a huge surprise — their grandmother came and gave them tons of presents. During the twins’ adventure, they’re once lost in the Dwarf Forest. Alex kept being positive and told Conner that they were not lost, they were just ‘travelling’. Eventually, their ‘travel’ led them to the Sleeping Kingdom, their planned destination.

Also, this book teaches us to be creative. When they were stuck in the Troll Bridge, Alex was forced to answer a challenging riddle, while Conner got creative and swam across the river. Alex got creative and answered the riddle that the troll claimed ‘nobody ever answered correctly’. Surprisingly, Alex got it correct!

The Wishing Spell is very thrilling. Every time the twins started to collect a new item, there was a twist. This made me anxious and worried about the twins — you’ll never know what will happen next! The author also gives answers to the confusing parts of classical fairytales. For example, children always ask why the Evil Queen is so self-admiring? The author says that ‘the Magic Mirror has imprisoned the Evil Queen’s long-lost love but he forgets the Evil Queen. Therefore, the Evil Queen has to preserve her little youth and beauty in order to let him remember her.’

In general, this is a good book. The Wishing Spell is meaningful and amusing. I recommend this book to every fairytale lover.
