A Story                                                                               1D Tsui Hing Man Mavis

One night, I was awakened by the sound of distant thunder. As I opened my eyes, I saw “her” again…

Johanna and I were both white-collar workers. One day, she told me that her friend gave her a diamond necklace. She showed it to me and it was really attractive! I always stole things. It became my habit. So why didn’t I just steal it?

One day, Johanna went out to buy food. I found the necklace quickly. But I heard some footsteps, so I wanted to put down the necklace and run back to my seat swiftly. However, Johanna saw me holding the necklace and shouted, “What are you doing?” I threw the necklace to her without thinking, then she fell heavily onto the ground. I didn’t know what to do, but I screamed loudly, picking up the broken piece of the “diamond” necklace, noticing that it was only glass…

How stupid I was!

I told the police that Johanna committed suicide. I even didn’t know why they didn’t suspect me. Because of my screaming? Well, I didn’t know. I felt lucky at first, but it became unlucky…

One evening, I had a video conference with my friend, Mary. It was normal, like what I did usually. But suddenly, Mary asked, “Who is the pretty girl sitting next to you?” “What?” I asked, looking around. I was alone in the room…With a teddy bear? It was Johanna’s favourite toy! “Do you mean this teddy bear? Hello?” Before she could answered, my phone turned off automatically. When I tried to turn it on again and press the power button, I could feel that there was a hand! I threw my phone away quickly. Maybe Johanna came back and played tricks on me? “Sorry, Johanna. But please stop pestering me and make me become a pitiful person like you, although I was the one who made you so pathetic!” I whispered. Johanna, can you hear me?

I blinked my eyes, Johanna disappeared. What she left was the empty room with me.

Maybe I have become a psychopath after I killed her? I felt sorry and penitential every time I saw her in my dream. It started to rain, like a ghost playing the piano. The wind was ululating, I felt really frightened. “Shall I tell the police? No, I can’t.” If I surrendered, they would put me in jail forever. But what should I do? Even God was provoked by me. I started to pray piously. Would God forgive me? Suddenly, I heard a voice saying, “Use the broken pieces of the necklace to make a new one and give it to your friend.” I was naive, as well as stupid before, so I thought that it must be God! But actually, it was from Satan, the fallen angel.

I used the broken pieces to make a new necklace and gave it to Mary as a birthday gift. I thought it was a blessing, but it was a curse. She had become a person who got crazy easily. From then on, I had not dreamt about Johanna. Perhaps Mary would give the necklace to others? Nobody knows where the necklace is. Maybe it is just inside your dressing table…
