The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg – A Modern Fable

Everyone should have heard about ‘The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg’ which was written by Aesop.  The story was mainly about a couple who killed a goose which could lay a golden egg a day because they wanted to get rich much faster.  They thought there were lots of golden eggs in the goose.  Unfortunately, there weren’t any.  They had no more golden eggs.  This story taught us an important lesson – too much greed results in nothing.
My brother Louis loved this story.  He thought being greedy was the worst thing in the world.  Indeed, he wasn’t greedy at all.  As Louis was a loud mouth, he got quite a number of enemies at school.  But if you really knew him well, you would find that he was actually a good person.
Last month, when Louis and I were walking back home as usual, we met a puppy which was wandering at the street sadly.  The puppy was abandoned by its master.  The puppy yelled poorly, ‘Woof… Woof…’  My kind brother picked it up and took it back home secretly.  He washed the puppy as thoroughly as he could before our parents came back.  He put the puppy in a box with a big hole and bought some food for it.
The next morning, when my brother woke up, he saw a golden necklace in the box of the puppy.  At first, he felt strange.  Then, he thought of the story ‘The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg’ and realized that was actually a gift from God for his kind heart of rescuing the puppy.  Louis was excited and full of happiness.  As I said, my brother was a loudmouth, and he told everyone he knew about the puppy (except our parents).  Everyone at school knew about that.
A week later, when we got home from school, we found the puppy and the box had gone!  Louis ran to the street and looked round and round but he couldn’t find the puppy.  He was frustrated.  He locked himself in his bedroom for a day.  He didn’t talk with me for a week!  I knew he was really unhappy.
Yesterday, mother told us a piece of news.  Mrs. Wong, our neighbor, had lost all of her accessories, so had Mrs. Chan.  They reported to the police.  The accessories were finally found in Louis’s classmate, Billy’s home.  They were in a box which contained a puppy.  Billy was arrested right now, probably going to stay in prison for a year or even more.  Louis and I knew what had happened – Well, Billy was one of Louis’s enemies.  He hated Louis because he kept talking and talking.  What we guessed was that he stole the puppy from Louis hoping the puppy would make him rich.  Unfortunately, the puppy brought him bad luck.  It went out every night and stole accessories from ladies.  And now, poor Billy had to be in prison.  I had to say that this really served him right.  Like what the fable taught, too much greed really results in nothing.
