Changes: for better or worse?

"It is more important to be clever than beautiful or handsome."
Do you agree?

In a society, there are many types of people from all walks of life, but what makes them different? Some people argue that having charming appearances and perfect body shapes is important, while others think that talents and intelligence will put one on the road of success. As for me, I believe that being clever is more important than beautiful or handsome.

Obviously, an attractive image can help one catch others’ eyes, but it is not crucial for building up good relationships with people around. For instance, people’s first impression on a beautiful woman is generally better than those with ordinary faces. Nevertheless, if she just looks down on others and neglects their feelings, she will never win people’s hearts. She will then end up without any real friends. On the other hand, clever people may not dazzle people’s eyes at first. With their intelligence, they can have a better understanding on others’ feeling and thinking, so they can appear to be more considerate. As it is easier for people to share their hearts with a considerate person, clever people will have a better advantage in getting along with others than those only with a pretty face.

Another thing worth considering is the durability of beauty and wisdom. Undoubtedly, people’s skin will loosen and different colour pigments will emerge on their faces as time goes by. Even a charming person cannot escape from the trace of time. However, wisdom will retain for a longer time. Hawking is a good case in point showing that a person can get old and weak physically but his brain can stay smart enough to tackle problems. Being more durable, intelligence is obviously more important to human’s lives.

More importantly, brilliance can bring more contributions to the world than beauty does. What beauty can bring is beauty, without any further contributions, like improving people’s life and saving the needy. Furthermore, beauty may only boost competitions upon beauty and cause ignorance or jealousy. In contrast, people’s intelligence has made improvements and advancements in many fields, from agriculture, science to literature. The latest technology even brings human artificial beauty, cosmetic surgery.

The discussion above makes it clear that being clever is more important than beautiful or handsome for individuals, and even the world. So everyone should treasure their intelligence, rather than place most of the efforts on beautifying their looks.
