The sex photo saga of the celebrities has captured the public attention for nearly a month. The nude photos are widely circulated on the highly accessible internet which makes the distribution of photos beyond the reach of the police and authorities. Not only are the celebrities required to pay for the price of fame, the whole community also suffers from a huge harassment due to this incident. The scandal seems fading away, but we have missed out an important question—what can we really learn from the sex photo saga?

It has sparked off public controversy over how the police handled the case. Though the police fail to stop the obscene materials being exposed to the public, they have tried their best to address the problems. The internet is a global network and it poses a big challenge to the police, so I can accept the limitation of the police force. However the police must improve the communication with Obscene Articles Tribunal so as to avoid making mistakes when arresting the suspects. They should present themselves as a socially reliable organization. In addition, they should not have a double standard in the treatment of celebrities and the ordinary citizens. Is it fair if they pledge to punish the criminals in this case while they do nothing or little when dealing with cases involving some famous people? Obviously, the police should learn from this experience and get well- prepared when similar things happen again.

Apart from the police, the whole general public should be taught a lesson. It is most disappointing to see most of the people discussing the matter not about themselves, but somebody else. Whether Gillian and Edison are hypocrites for having sex is not the key issue, because we are all hypocrites as we keep doing something which we know wrong. We should respect everyone’s privacy. We can easily upload these sex photos from the web, but is it right for us to infringe others’ privacy? As a socially responsible citizen, we have the obligations to stop this scandal harming the involved celebrities and polluting youngsters’ minds.

In the light of the sex photo saga, the moral values of our new generation towards sex have become fuzzier. This reveals the urgency to plant the absolute moral standard in their mindset. To achieve the goal, media players must not publicize the photos that extravagantly nor exaggerate every twist in this sex photo scandal.

To sum up, everyone has the obligation to protect privacy, that is obviously violated in the sex photo affair. Before we let this tragedy die away, we have to admit our mistakes and learn a good lesson to make a better future of Hong Kong.
