  • Moving up/ Race to the top/ Rewards and benefits/ Long-term prospects
  • A day at work
  • The happiest time in my career/ An unforgettable experience in my career

Getting started

After graduating from university with my marketing degree, I finally got the chance to chase my dream, to work as an event organiser. To be an event organiser, you must be able to complete a wide range of activities with clear communication skills, excellent organisational ability and attention to detail. Frankly, I admit that I’m not bad at languages, especially in speaking, I’m quite organised (at least more organised than my sister) and I am an observant person since I seldom miss details when doing assignments and I never forget to bring things at different occasions. I was born for this job! But when I applied for the job, I was half excited and nervous since I could not wait doing my dream job but I was so afraid of the dreadful job interview. When I entered the interviewing room, I thought “Well, there goes nothing.” and dashed in. As a result, I GOT THE JOB, YEAH!

Rewards and benefits

As said before, an event organiser is responsible for a wide range of activities including researching markets to identify opportunities for events, producing detailed proposals for events such as timelines, venues, suppliers, legal obligations, staffing and so on, not to mention managing plus agreeing to a budget. Though not many people would appreciate my hard work but there are so much rewards other than your boss’s appreciation.  Even though I have been doing this job for only 3 years, I have already gained quite a lot of rewards such as my close relationship with me colleagues, Ellie and Jayden, the experience (both nice and bad) from the job and the skills I picked up from the job (Trust me, I’m getting the hang of it). Maybe these are the rewards of life my mom has been telling about, “The greatest rewards of work never come from your bosses”, that’s what she always says.

A day at work

How hard could it be to organize events? Easy for you to say, not everyone has the chance to experience the life of an event organizer, or should I say “my life”. Now let me briefly explain my daily routine at work. (Oops, I almost forgot to mention that I work for a company selling organic food) I am mainly responsible for events related to festivals so I normally would start my day by searching opportunities to promote the organic products or continue my work from my last project. Then, I would prepare a checklist for the items to be put in my proposal such as the rundown of the festival, the venue of the festival and so on. Next, I would follow the guidelines from the upper levels and start making a detailed proposal. After finish making the proposal, I would hand it in to the marketing manager and let him have a glimpse. Not every time I can have my proposal accepted as there may be flaws or my suggested event was not even practical enough to be held. As a newbie, I have to be prepared for having my ideas banned again and again while not letting it destroy my confidence and passion toward my job. In a nutshell, my job is quite challenging yet interesting enough to keep me motivated so I’m glad I have this job.

An unforgettable experience in my career

One time, I was assigned to promote our products at a Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which is an Indian festival that celebrates the birth of the Hindu elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesha. When I knew about the news, I immediately had a panic attack since I was worried that I didn’t understand the Indian culture enough, did something stupid and disrespect the Indian culture. Luckily, I got the chance to work with my reliable partners Ellie and Jayden so I did not have to worry so much. We went through a lot of research before we start doing our project so that we could provide tailor-made products and services to our customers without breaching cultural taboos. This time, I was in charge of decorations and I was thrilled since I love everything involved with visual presentation. On the big day, I found that a heavy part the decoration was dangling near the lamps and it almost fell down on the heads of our customers attending the festival. I normally have sloth-like responses, but at that moment I was the closest person to the “site of action” so I covered myself with a pantry dish, sneaked through the crowds and stretch my arms as quick as possible to prevent the risk.  “Wow you were as fast as a jaguar.” Said Ellie, who was amazed by my slick and quick response and so am I. That was the time when I knew that “desperate times needs desperate measures”, well not that desperate but you get what I mean. In general, it was a fun and unforgettable experience and there are so much more to count. I can’t wait to encounter more difficult challenges and make more memories!
