{"id":6493,"date":"2019-07-11T01:48:53","date_gmt":"2019-07-11T01:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carmelss.edu.hk\/buddingwriters\/?p=6493"},"modified":"2019-07-11T01:48:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T01:48:59","slug":"declining-tourism-in-hong-kong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carmelss.edu.hk\/buddingwriters\/archives\/6493","title":{"rendered":"Declining Tourism in Hong Kong"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear\nEditor,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nrefer to an article in the South China Morning Post about tourism in Hong Kong,\nsaying that the number of tourists visiting the city has fallen.&nbsp; There are a number of reasons for the declining\nfigures and I would like to suggest ways in which Hong Kong can attract\nvisitors back to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong\nKong\u2019s air pollution is such a serious problem that it becomes travelers\u2019\nconcern.&nbsp; The main source comes from\ncoal-fired power stations and vehicles.&nbsp;\nThis decreases the visibility and it may cause health problems.&nbsp; Visitors are worried that the poor air\nquality will affect their health, so Hong Kong becomes less attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong\nKong becomes less competitive than the other Asian countries as it has limited\ntourist spots.&nbsp; For example, there are\ntwo Disneylands in China now\u2014one in Hong Kong and one in Shanghai.&nbsp; The mainlanders have more choices.&nbsp; Also, there is the Great Wall in Beijing,\nLotte World in Korea, Mount Fuji in Japan and so on.&nbsp; Visitors have many choices for travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently,\nthe rise in hostility of the localists has also scared away the tourist.&nbsp; Many Hong Kong people are dissatisfied with\nthe coming of mainland visitors.&nbsp; They\ncomplain that the residential areas are crowded with the mainlanders.&nbsp; This makes the narrow streets become\ndifficult to navigate and it also disrupts their lives.&nbsp; The hostility makes Hong Kong less appealing\nto mainlanders.&nbsp; According to the statistics,\nHong Kong visitors mainly come from the mainland.&nbsp; When the number of mainland visitors\ndecreases, there is a sharp decline in the number of visitors to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nabove mentioned are just part of the problems our tourist industry is\nfacing.&nbsp; If these are getting worse, our\neconomy will be greatly affected.&nbsp; To\nremedy this situation, a number of measures should be carried out immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First\nand foremost, there should be better promotion of Hong Kong tourism around the\nworld.&nbsp; Government officials should visit\nother countries to promote Hong Kong as a good tourist spot.&nbsp; TV or online advertisements can also be one\nof the effective ways.&nbsp; The Tourism Board\nshould also develop eco-tourism and heritage torus to attract visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ngovernment should also improve the quality of services in Hong Kong.&nbsp; For example, Hong Kong government can employ\nretired people to be tourist ambassadors to spread a sense of belonging to\ntourists.&nbsp; The ambassadors can help them\ntake photos and give them information free of charge.&nbsp; Also, more free Wi-Fi areas should be\ndeveloped to facilitate the free flow of tourist information.&nbsp; Besides, complaint channels about shops and\ntaxi-drivers should be open to all tourists to combat dishonest sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another\nmeasure is that the Tourism Board should hold a round of events to promote Hong\nKong\u2019s unique culture.&nbsp; As Hong Kong is\ndescribed as a place where \u2018East meets West\u2019, this mixed culture should be\nwidely promoted.&nbsp; For example, street\narts and Old Town Central can be some of the highlight attractions.&nbsp; Moreover, more international sports events\nshould be held, e.g. Hong Kong Sevens and marathons.&nbsp; Hopefully, this can attract different\ntourists to come to Hong Kong.&nbsp; Other\nmeasures include quickening the development of infra-structure e.g. highways,\nbridges, transport network, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nhope that the government will carry out a series of measures to remedy the\nsituation, so the number of visitors to the city will increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yours\nfaithfully<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au\nSin Nga<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au\nSin Nga<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- wp:paragraph --><p>DeaEditor<\/p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><p>refer to an article in the South China Morning Post about tourism in Hong Kongsaying that the number of tourists visiting the city has fallen.
