It is clear that the problem of the ageing population in Hong Kong is more serious nowadays and actions should be taken as soon as possible to alleviate the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many elderly people are left at home with nothing to do after their retirement and may feel that their lives are worthless. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A couple of months ago, my grandfather was one of them. He stayed at home most of the days, not because he wanted to, but because he did not know what else he could use his time for<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Grandpa felt miserable those days, especially since he lived alone in his flat, he had no one to chat with nor spend time with.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily for him, he met a social worker working at the community center near his apartment during a random shopping trip in a convenience store. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The social worker, Jon, after listening to my grandfather\u2019s groans and moans, invited him to do some volunteer work. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Jon persuaded grandpa to help out at the center and contribute himself to helping the <\/span>community<\/span>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>At first, my grandpa re<\/span>f<\/span>used quite firmly as he thought it was impossible that anyone would need help from someone as old and weak as himself. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However, after a longer chat with Jon, he was convinced that despite his age, there was still much use in him. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He decided to participate in volunteer work twice a week and it <\/span>i<\/span>s the best decision he <\/span>has <\/span>ever made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My grandfather instantly transformed himself from a self-despised elderly into a content and jubilant man. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He fe<\/span>els<\/span> as <\/span>if<\/span> he <\/span>h<\/span>as regained a purpose and meaning in his life and his time <\/span>i<\/span>s no longer wasted. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Grandpa even share<\/span>s<\/span> with my family his experience in volunteer work. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He has helped distribute daily necessities to the less fortunate, organiz<\/span>ed<\/span> morning exercise gatherings for the elderly around the block and ease other elderly people out of their anxieties. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However, his favorite one of all is to teach kids table tennis during the weekends. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He t<\/span>ells<\/span> us that he c<\/span>an<\/span> feel rejuvenated with kids around him, as well as hav<\/span>ing<\/span> a bit of exercise himself so he enjoy<\/span>s<\/span> it dearly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I <\/span>am<\/span> completely amazed to see my grandfather change so much after several months of volunteering. He d<\/span>oes<\/span>n\u2019t slump around in the house anymore, but head<\/span>s<\/span> to the community center whenever he ha<\/span>s<\/span> free time and he <\/span>i<\/span>s much more enthusiastic about his life than before and w<\/span>ears<\/span> a big smile every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that most of the <\/span>senior citizens<\/span> in society feel bored and useless after retirement, like my grandfather. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It is therefore, essential for us to help the elderly rebuild their confidence. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The most effective way is definitely <\/span>to <\/span>provid<\/span>e<\/span> more opportunities for <\/span>the <\/span>elderly people to help others in need. By doing so, the elder<\/span>ly<\/span> would feel less needy and dependent but more proud of their own abilities to aid others. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This could enhance Hong Kong\u2019s aged group\u2019s psychological well<\/span>–<\/span>being and would help cope with the ageing problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another method is to encourage <\/span>the <\/span>elderly people to exercise more, like having morning exercise or playing simple ball games. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This c<\/span>an<\/span> allow constant movement of body muscles; thus, keep the elder<\/span>ly<\/span>\u2019s physical state healthy and strong. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Illness<\/span>es<\/span> would be less frequent and the medical expenses of <\/span>the <\/span>elderly people would decrease subsequently. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Hong Kong\u2019s ageing problem w<\/span>ill<\/span> be better alleviated.<\/span><\/p>\n
