Dear Editor,<\/span><\/p>\n

I am writing to draw <\/span>your <\/span>readers\u2019 attention to K-pop.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that most readers have heard of My Love from the Star.\u00a0 Are the main actor, Kim Soo Hyun, and the actress, Jun Ji Hyun, so charming?\u00a0 Opinions differ.<\/span><\/p>\n

A friend of mine is a diehard fan of Kim.\u00a0 Last week, she called in sick to school in order to meet her idol at the airport.\u00a0 She is so obsessed about chasing stars \u00a0that she forgoes academic results.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why have teenagers always been sucker<\/span>s<\/span> for the superstar<\/span>s<\/span>?\u00a0 The reasons are simple.\u00a0 Teenagers are too superficial.\u00a0 Research shows that most of them only focus on the appearance of the artists.\u00a0 Appearance should never be the main reason why we love <\/span>somebody<\/span>.\u00a0 And interestingly, many of the Korean celebrities have an artificial face.<\/span>\u00a0It is a pity that many young adults just neglect the importance of inner beauty<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

No doubt<\/span>,<\/span> some Korean songs are well composed in terms of melody and lyrics.\u00a0 Some \u2018supercalifragilisticexpialidocious\u2019 Korean songs are indeed quite appealing. \u00a0Yet K-pop brings about negative effects to teenagers for reasons that follow.<\/span><\/p>\n

K-pop is eroding <\/span>our <\/span>local culture.\u00a0 Everyone watches KBS dramas instead of TVB, let alone ATV nowadays.\u00a0 The number of viewers of TVB has been decreasing tremendously since K-pop gets into its stride.\u00a0 The influence of Cantopop has faded out and Hong Kong\u2019s culture has become less appealing.<\/span>\u00a0It is important that we do everything to protect our local culture and thus our c<\/span>ultural identity, which is important for Hongkongers\u2019 sense of belonging.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from cultural invasion, some Korean songs inculcate wrong messages into youngsters\u2019 minds about sex and violence.\u00a0 Being immature and impulsive in nature, teenagers lack the ability to interpret the lyrics.\u00a0 Some of the Korean songs are <\/span>sexually <\/span>aggressive.\u00a0 We can always see hot, sexy girls, dressed in bikini, hot pants or mini-skirts, seducing male with their charming figures.\u00a0 Others promulgate violence.\u00a0 Many of the music videos feature scenes involving guns and explosions.\u00a0 The immorality instilled in the teenagers deserves our attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

K-pop not only has an impact on the moral values of adolescents, but also their consumption patterns.\u00a0 Research shows that some of the K-pop fanatics spend over 2000 HKD per year on Korean-related products. \u00a0This is a huge amount <\/span>of<\/span> teenagers as they are still relying on their parents and lack the ability to make money themselves.\u00a0 They spend money on things they are interested <\/span>in <\/span>rather than what is useful to them.\u00a0 They should have saved the money for future use, like studies, instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

To revive Cantopop, the <\/span>g<\/span>overnment should allocate more resources to the local culture industry.\u00a0 In 2013\/14, the Government allocates $3.3 billion on culture and the arts, excluding capital works expenditure.\u00a0 This accounts for less than 1% of the total government spending.\u00a0 More students should be subsidized to study in <\/span>The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts<\/span><\/span> or take up music-related courses.\u00a0 If better quality Cantonese songs and plays come up, more and more Hongkongers will be aware of and appealed to Cantopop and hopefully the K-pop wave would fade out eventually.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>g<\/span><\/span>overnment should also take positive measures to promote street performance, which is a part of Hong Kong art culture.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>In fact, o<\/span><\/span>pportunities for art performers to show their skills and talents have greatly diminished since the government adopted a policy to shorten the pedestrian zone hours in Mong Kok recently. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Unless the government does something soon, K-pop will certainly dominate Hong Kong\u2019s pop culture.\u00a0 Is this what we really want to see?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
