Good morning dear fellow schoolmates and teachers, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s <\/span>my<\/span> pleasure to share my experience working as an assistant for the Going Green Centre<\/em> during this summer. <\/span>Although t<\/span>he work there was tough indeed<\/span>, the experience I\u2019ve gained is <\/span>very memorable and distinct in my secondary school life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My intimate friends and teacher shall know that I have been sensitive to green issues <\/span>— <\/span>not because I am genuinely environmentally friendly, but my indigenous affection to the nature. Every time when I hear about news related to Hongkongers\u2019 lack of the sense of conservation, the warning bell of the near-saturated landfill<\/span>, <\/span>I<\/span>\u2019<\/span>ll <\/span>feel very<\/span> desperate as I ca<\/span>n\u2019t understand<\/span> why <\/span>our fellow citizens<\/span>can<\/span> be so ignorant about the <\/span>consequence<\/span>\u2013 the sky<\/span>rocketing rate of global warming. Thus<\/span>,<\/span> honestly<\/span>,<\/span> I was not excited when I received the news that I had got a chance to work for Going Green <\/em><\/span>C<\/span><\/em>entre<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/em>which is an organization launching a very large scale recycling scheme in some public housing estates in Hong Kong<\/span>.<\/span><\/em> I thought it was impossible to make any changes to people\u2019s life as long as they were still insensitive to the gloomy situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, the situation always gets a U-turn at the most unexpected moment. On the first day of my practice, I was told to conduct a regular check to record at what level the recycling bins were utilized. Having the perception that the degree of utilization would be low, I <\/span>was pessimistic. I simply thought it was a waste of time doing the job.<\/span>However, just at the moment when my senior and I stepped out of the office, <\/span>a little girl in white school uniform carrying some used paper packages of drinks and <\/span>empty <\/span>cans of cola<\/span> stood<\/span> before <\/span>us<\/span>. <\/span>It seemed that she wanted to ask us a question and <\/span>looked a bit embarrassed. \u201cWhere are the recycling bins? I want to have them recycled,\u201d she spoke in a soft voice. <\/span>Can you imagine how I felt at that moment? <\/span>I was immensely overjoyed, and immediately helped her carry some of the cans and went back to <\/span>the block of building she lived in. We showed<\/span> her the <\/span>recycling <\/span>bins<\/span>,<\/span>which <\/span>were actually located at the lobby of the <\/span>block next to<\/span> the mailbox. I felt<\/span> more encouraged <\/span>when the little girl told me that she had washed the cans thoroughly before, making the procedure of recycling easier and less costly. The excitement remained for the rest of my practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only did the experience ignite my enthusiasm working at the centre, but it reminded me <\/span>of <\/span>the key to the <\/span>success<\/span> of the regular <\/span>recycling <\/span>scheme<\/span> — <\/span>our children. It is our children<\/span>,<\/span> who construct the future society. The importance of recycling must be instilled in them when they are <\/span>young<\/span>, so that they can make<\/span> it their <\/span>habit of a lifetime by years of practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be done to promote recycling? <\/span>I think that the current measures are far from enough to <\/span>lead<\/span>a successful recycling campaign<\/span>. Publishing advertisements, broadcasting TV commercials and other means of media are not quite effective in encouraging Hong<\/span>k<\/span>ongers<\/span>, including the young generation,<\/span> to <\/span>develop<\/span> the habit of recycling. I think what the government could do now is to increase <\/span>the <\/span>subsid<\/span>ies<\/span> for NGOs like Going Green Centre<\/em> to employ more resources to implement recycling scheme<\/span>s<\/span> on <\/span>a <\/span>reward<\/span>basis to further raise the incentive of <\/span>the <\/span>residents to support<\/span>recycling more.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone, let\u2019s not <\/span>look down upon<\/span> the efforts<\/span> that an individual<\/span> c<\/span>an<\/span> pay. A<\/span>little step of ours signifies a great step of <\/span>the whole city<\/span>.<\/span> Let\u2019s join hands to promote recycling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
