It was his 16th<\/sup> birthday. \u00a0Terry woke up at 10 am. \u00a0As usual, he was alone. \u00a0His mom went to work hours before he woke up, and would not come back until 10pm. \u00a0Thinking his mom had already forgotten his big day, he saw a carton with a sleeping puppy inside placed on the ground with a note.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know many things have happened recently and it would be a hard time for us now. \u00a0That way, I bought you this present to cheer you up. \u00a0Hope you\u2019d like it. \u00a0Love, Mommy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a lovable, furry puppy which was white with brown spots and had small floppy ears. \u00a0Terry held the puppy in front of his chest, and the puppy looked at him innocently. \u00a0\u201cWhat kind of puppy doesn\u2019t have a leg? \u00a0What\u2019s the point of a sick dog? \u00a0This sucks! \u00a0I don\u2019t want puppy. \u00a0I don\u2019t want anything! \u00a0I HATE YOU!\u201d \u00a0He put the puppy aside rudely and went back to his bedroom with the door banged shut. \u00a0Terry crouched at the corner behind the door and started crying. \u00a0He remembered those days when his dad always stayed and played football with him. \u00a0All these precious memories would never be relived. \u00a0Never ever. \u00a0His dad left his family in a sea of sorrow after the car accident. \u00a0His dad was driving his family home when suddenly it lost control.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was staring at the bookshelf while crying when a photo on top of the bookshelf heaved into sight. \u00a0It was a photo when Terry and his football teammates won the Hong Kong interschool football competition and he was honored as the Best Football Player of the year. \u00a0The trophy with a golden man model held by him in the photo was also put on his desk.<\/span><\/p>\n

He recalled the moment when he was coldly insulted by his teammates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re useless now, go away.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you? A piece of trash?\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you to join us now?\u00a0 Please, look at yourself, huh.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

His acid-tongued teammates kept on teasing him. \u00a0He could not imagine he lost almost everything after that. \u00a0He was so desperate that he left school.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow ironic,\u201d he stared at the trophy with \u201cthe Best Football Player \u2013 Terry Richardson\u201d written on it. \u201cI am only a loser right now. \u201c\u00a0 Outraged by remembering how he was ridiculed, he threw the trophy onto the ground and a leg of the golden man broke and flew away.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBark! \u00a0Bark!\u201d The dog was barking fiercely. \u00a0Terry thought it was hungry. \u00a0Opening the door, He found the puppy enjoying itself with his football. \u00a0The puppy continuously lost balance and fell onto the ground, which looked really stupid. \u00a0But it wagged its tail and tried to invite Terry to play with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not like the other dogs\u2026You can\u2019t play. \u00a0You\u2019re only there for people to feel sorry for you. \u00a0Don\u2019t pretend you\u2019re happy!\u201c\u00a0 He yelled at it.<\/span><\/p>\n

It surely didn\u2019t understand what he was saying. \u00a0The puppy ignored his master and played on. \u00a0POF! \u00a0It fell again, but it stood up and played. \u00a0POF! \u00a0No matter how many times it fell, it would not stop.<\/span><\/p>\n

A tear dropped on the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terry still had not forgotten the scenes of the accident, like it had just happened yesterday. \u00a0His dad died in front of him. \u00a0And how he regretted having sneered at his teammates the same way they treated him that day. \u00a0Now he lost almost everything, but his aching heart still remained.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSee? You\u2019re not like the others, you can\u2019t even walk like a normal dog.\u201c Terry spoke in a hoarse voice and sobbed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no use, right? \u00a0You don\u2019t care about your leg. \u00a0You\u2019re happy anyway\u2026\u201d The puppy looked at him in puzzlement with its tilting head, but then it barked loudly, and wiggled its tail.<\/span><\/p>\n
