{"id":1304,"date":"2013-05-10T05:58:27","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T05:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web02.carmelss.edu.hk\/buddingwriters2\/archives\/1304"},"modified":"2015-05-24T07:07:10","modified_gmt":"2015-05-24T07:07:10","slug":"advice-on-a-job-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carmelss.edu.hk\/buddingwriters\/archives\/1304","title":{"rendered":"Advice on a Job Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Hi Mary,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 It\u2019s been quite a while since our last email. \u00a0How\u2019re you doing on your QF course? \u00a0 Managed to make some good friends there? \u00a0I\u2019ve got to know quite a few friends here, but most of them are girls! \u00a0Just kidding. \u00a0Philosophy, well, I can still scrape through its exams!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 I\u2019ve thought long and hard about how you can get the one-and-only-one \u201cPart-time-Promoter\u201d post in Motorola Ltd. \u00a0With me, you won\u2019t ever fail, don\u2019t be nervous! \u00a0(By the way, why don\u2019t you concentrate on your studies first? \u00a0You can get at least HK$50,000 per month right after your graduation!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 To prepare for an interview, what you must do in the first place is a one-min self intro. \u00a0Though it\u2019s quite obvious that you can make an impression as you\u2019re extraordinarily outspoken, you need to try your best to extract the most important information you want others to know about you. (Don\u2019t mention that you\u2019re a QF student as it\u2019s included in the resume you\u2019ve sent me and it\u2019s likely to be misunderstood that you\u2019re arrogant!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Next, it\u2019s the research about the company \u2013 all the operations of the company, even a cough from the CEO, its financial position, its direction, its missions\u2026 etc. \u00a0It\u2019s advisable to browse the website up and down to take down all the key points about the company. \u00a0It\u2019s good if you could read through the company\u2019s financial statements, but this isn\u2019t a must. \u00a0(It should be a piece of cake for a QF student, right?) \u00a0The pay scale of the company is very very very very very important info as you\u2019re likely to be asked about the desired wages. \u00a0Having known Motorola inside and out can surely impress the interviewer and gain you an edge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 The last few things you need are a good sleep, a refreshed mind and a decent look on that day. \u00a0Don\u2019t stay up late the night before your interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Now, we can proceed to the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 You should be in a suit. \u00a0Despite the fact that it\u2019s just for the post of a promoter, it\u2019s still a business sector interview. \u00a0For the make-up, just the kind for a get-together with friends. \u00a0Don\u2019t smear your face with heavy make-up as it\u2019ll make you look too mature for your age. \u00a0(That time in our 6D reunion, your make-up was quite appropriate.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Arrive 15 mins before the scheduled time. \u00a0In other words, be there at 0845. You should wear a smile right after you depart from home. \u00a0Maybe the interviewer is your neighbor, who knows? \u00a0No rude manners and try your very best to be polite. \u00a0It can please the interviewer a lot if you know how to say \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 It\u2019s the time for the main part \u2013 the real group interview. \u00a0Knock on the door and wait for a \u201ccome in\u201d before getting inside. \u00a0Hold the door for other interviewees for proper etiquette. \u00a0Say \u201cgood morning, sir\/madam\u201d and bow your head. \u00a0Sit only when instructed. \u00a0Put your hands on the table (or knees if there\u2019s no table) in a polite way. \u00a0Don\u2019t fidget; don\u2019t \u201cspin pens\u201d. \u00a0No irritable gestures. \u00a0Also, no crossed legs!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 When you speak, don\u2019t just look at the interviewer, though I know you love him. Look at the interviewees in a friendly way, though I know you want to kill them instantly. \u00a0When you cough, remember to say \u201cexcuse me\u201d. \u00a0Don\u2019t panic if you\u2018ve spoken something incorrect. \u00a0People in the room may not know you\u2019re incorrect but they\u2019ll certainly know if you panic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 For the content of your speech, whether in a group discussion, debate or conversation with the interviewer, you should firstly paraphrase the previous speaker\u2019s ideas, add in your views and then invite others to speak. \u00a0(All these things were taught in F.6. \u00a0I still remember Ms. Young\u2018s funny yet proper demonstration. Dig out those oral materials for further studies.) \u00a0No personal attack, no raised voice, but make more constructive suggestions. \u00a0Still one more reminder: they may disapprove of you and your points, but you must keep smiling \u2013 it\u2019s the basic requirement for the post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 After the interview, you should open the door for others to leave first. \u00a0Then say goodbye to the interviewer and leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Oops! I \u2018ve missed a few points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 1. Don\u2019t show your mobile phone. (It\u2019s a mobile phone company; no rival products.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 2. Don\u2019t speak far too much (though you\u2019re vocal).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 3.
