Dear Diary,
\u00a0 So many unexpected things have happened today.\u00a0 My mind is flooded with messy thoughts, feelings and memories of the past.\u00a0 I have to tell you everything, or it will be unbearable.
\u00a0 Today began perfectly normally, just like any other Sundays \u2013 until I brought Johnny to the playground of the park in the late afternoon.\u00a0 There, I met Matilda!
\u00a0 I wonder if you still remember Matilda Loisel, as I hadn\u2019t mentioned her for about ten years.\u00a0 We were friends since primary school.\u00a0 Later I married Edmund and she married a less successful man Loisel, and our friendship remained.\u00a0 She dreamt about a life like mine.\u00a0 I found that she however wasn\u2019t jealous of the people luckier than her, though she did have a new habit of belittling her family.\u00a0 I liked her and always invited her over for tea.\u00a0 I decided to help her whenever I could.\u00a0 So one day when she came and asked if she could borrow some jewels for going to a party, I agreed immediately.
\u00a0 She didn\u2019t choose the bracelets or gold pins.\u00a0 She loved a diamond necklace –\u00a0 actually made of glass.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t tell her it was fake, because she was so excited.\u00a0 I lent it to her.\u00a0 She returned it to me two weeks later, and suddenly disappeared from the neighbourhood.
Ten years passed.\u00a0 And today in the park, a woman approached me and greeted me. She looked old, with grey hair and rough skin, wearing shabby clothes.\u00a0 I was a bit shocked when I knew she is Matilda.\u00a0 She looked totally different.\u00a0 She explained. And the story she told me is alarmingly incredulous.
She lost the glass necklace, after going to the party.\u00a0 So she bought a real diamond necklace, which has taken her and her husband ten years to pay for, to return to me.
I finally understood the situation.\u00a0 Horrible.\u00a0 Matilda didn\u2019t know \u2013 and she smiled.\u00a0 I had no choice but to tell her the truth, \u201dMy necklace was fake.\u00a0 It was made out of glass.\u00a0 It was not worth more than five hundred francs!\u201d\u00a0 Oh, am I cruel?\u00a0 Dear Diary, is it better to keep the secret forever?\u00a0 The thing is over, and I shouldn\u2019t hurt Matilda again, should I?\u00a0 Matilda became pale, her hands trembled. She shook her head slowly, and looked at me helplessly.\u00a0 Then she left.
What have I done to Matilda!\u00a0 If she hadn\u2019t lied to me that night\u2026 But I\u2019m the one who lied to her first!\u00a0 That\u2019s all my fault!\u00a0 Poor, poor Matilda!\u00a0 Poor, poor Mr. Loisel!\u00a0 And me, what should I do?\u00a0 Dear Diary, what should I do?
I\u2019ve kept the diamond necklace nicely all these years, which I realize is the most most graceful thing I\u2019ve done in my life.\u00a0 It shall be worth five thousand francs today. I will give it back to Matilda tomorrow.\u00a0 Mr. Loisel can sell it and move back to their old department, or even a slightly better one.\u00a0 I will apologize for a thousand times.\u00a0 I will sell all my jewellery, and give every cent to Matilda.\u00a0 I will ask Edmund if there are any high-income jobs for Mr. Loisel.\u00a0 I will\u2026
What else can I do, dear Diary?\u00a0 How can I pay off the ten years she lost owing to me?\u00a0 What have I done?\u00a0 How can I face Matilda tomorrow?\u00a0 Oh, dear Diary!<\/p>\n
